Front 9 Qualifier

Our lovely course.

England Golf are encouraging clubs to add 9 Hole Qualifiers to the Competitions that they offer. They give the opportunity to keep handicaps accurate; to put in a Qualifying card which will count towards Trophy Competition requirements, and especially useful if pressed for time or returning from illness/absence. It's a great way back in.

So, today was the first of these - a trial run to see how all the software would work and how it would turn out.

15 Ladies came to play - exact handicaps were written on the card  and 'strokes received' calculated. It seemed odd to be playing off 8, 12, 16 or whatever but the strokes received are actually similar to when playing our usual 18 holes - it just felt different!

5th Hole

The course itself is looking lovely and the greens are improving (it is good to be back on the first). It is such a difficult task to mend these greens but Mark seems to be making steady progress with them.

It was great to see a good turn out - the weather was overcast but good. In fact as we left the club after we'd had our coffee etc, a sea fret moved in and made things quite unpleasant.

Anyway, on brighter things, it was good to have Jean  back among us after being poorly.

In fact a tale needs to be told about Jean... on the second, she tried to chip in from next to the sand.

Discussions

Ruth's version: A huge rock leapt out of the bunker and sideswiped Jean's ball into the sand!

Outrageous....

Anne's version: the rock seductively enticed the ball into a sunbathe on the golden sand...

whichever version you prefer - it was hard lines!

However... not to be put off Jean had a TWO on the fifth! Not just any sort of two... she chipped in from a mile away!

Jean just having played her shot on the 5th...

Any sign of the ball???

Apologies for the rather blurred picture... but Jean thought it was a joke!

No joke - a two for five!!!!

Well done!

There it is!
A Happy Jean!

In fact - Jean played so well - she won the competition!

Lindsay came second with 15, beating Ruth on Countback. Sonia was fourth.

The full result is here.

Some of you will have noticed that there was no Competition Scratch for this competition. This is in line with CONGU who have decided that no CSS will be worked out for 9 Hole Qualifying competitions.

Next Thursday it will be a Qualifier on the Back 9. The same procedure will be followed and we'll see how it all works.

Many thanks to Hilary for coming specially today to organise this 9 Hole Qualifier.

Club Championships on Saturday - good luck everyone - lets pray for a dry day.

Lady Captain's Charity Day

Saturday 25th

Today was our Lady Captain's Charity day. Our usual blogger was poorly so today's report comes from Claire.

It was a chilly morning with grey skies but a nice day for golf. The course is showing signs of our Green-keeper Mark's experienced and magic touch. The greens will take a while but the rain has helped.
First was Jayne with a stableford score of 37 points - well played. Sue D was second with 34 and Hilary third with 33.
Charity day winner!

Sonia's John ran a putting competition; this had joint winners with a score of 5 - Val and Hilary!
Sonia also had a bring and buy stall and a silent auction - and has made about £370 from the auction and donations.

Just a reminder - Sonia's Charity is St Petroc's - if you would like to read more about what they do, then click here.

Thanks everyone.

PS... for full results click here. Congratulations to you on on your handicap cut Jayne.

Thursday

Thursday morning Roll up

What beautiful weather! Today 11 ladies turned up for our Roll up and conditions were perfect.
It was the Back 9 and Mark has sprayed the front 9 to both feed the grass and treat the leather-jackets.  (Please wash hands carefully after playing as it's nasty stuff.)

The course is looking fantastic and the greens improving every day - so good to see.

There were some good scores in today with Chris L winning with 19 points (including a blob!) Well played Chris.
Lindsay was second with 18 (also with a blob) and Sue D was third with 17 (on Countback from Ruth)

Hoping for the weather to be just as good on Saturday for Lady Captain's Charity day.

A heads up - next Thursday's Front 9 will be a qualifier and the results will be put onto the computer. This is a trial run to see if the software works as it should - the following week will be a qualifying Back 9.

Tuesday

Lucky Tuesday

Nine folk turned up for our Fun Tuesday evening golf. We played in teams of three with two scores to count. This week the three ladies played together and it proved a lucky combination.
Almost a hole in 1!

The ladies decided to start on the twelfth... Ruth pulled her drive way left... Sarah stood on the tee and as she launched her ball she said "Oh... I didn't mean to do that... oh dear..."

The ball sailed through the air... it landed.. it bounced... it ran... and you guessed it... it was almost a hole in one!

Absolutely brilliant!  Sarah scored a 2 for 5 points!

Jayne had a 4 for 3 points and scored well throughout the round!

Sarah's luck continued... on the 15th tee she decided to have a go at getting over the orchard... she miss-hit the ball...

but...

..it ended up half-way across the bridge!

If she was heading for a bunker... this would happen...

Almost needless to say, the ladies came in with an outrageous score of 47!
Well played Sarah, Jayne and Ruth!

Second place scored 39... so 47 really was outrageous!

Baron Rosebowl

Baron Rosebowl

Thursday saw six of our ladies represent Cape Cornwall at Tehidy in the Baron Rosebowl County Competition. There were teams from 19 clubs in Cornwall, stretching from Cape to Bude and North Cornwall!

The format is Foursomes Medal and each club entered three pairs, so it was a big field. Our ladies went out fairly early, paired with players from Killiow. Play was rather slow with a couple of backlogs but our ladies represented us well and fortunately the weather stayed dry.

Waiting on the tenth

The winning team was Tehidy scoring 446, St Mellion second with 466.
The scores fell into several groups, with first and second winning by some distance. After that 3rd and 4th were only two shots apart with 477 (Newquay) and 479 (Carlyon Bay); 5th to 11th only had 5 shots between them 483-488; Looe had 493 and Cape 494 equal 13th with Bude.
Mullion, China Fleet, St Austell, Lanhydrock and Killiow completed the field.

Tehidy gave our ladies a great welcome and provided an excellent meal afterwards. Thanks to our ladies for representing Cape, particularly Sue who was feeling unwell; and well played Fran and Fiona for your two!

Tuesday golf

Waltz

Tuesday fun golf took the format of a Waltz.

8th green

A Waltz is played in threes; on the fist hole only one score is recorded; on the next hole two scores and on the third three scores count...1,2,3 and then repeated... 123,123,123... hence a Waltz!

The weather was lovely though the wind was stronger than it has been for a while. The sky was absolutely gorgeous with high wispy clouds streaming across the blue.

Eleven players played, in drawn teams of three. The team of two had  a secret partner - another player's score was added in at the end.

The winners with 40 points were Mike D, Lyn and Jayne. In second were Chris J and Ruth (and their secret partner who turned out to be Mike D!)

A lovely evening, do come and join us if you can - it is lovely fun with several staying on for food afterwards.

Oh... and the greens are looking better every day... well done Mark!

Ping 4 Ball Better Ball

Ping 4 Ball

Today it was the Ping 4 Ball Better Ball and after a cloudy start the weather was lovely.  There were 14 ladies who played today - 3 groups of four plus Jean and Val on their own as a two ball. The scores were pretty good, with 34 points being the lowest!

The first four ball teeing off.

Anne  was playing very steadily but was heard to grumble about her swing... it was only "half a swing"   Below is the typical result of one of Anne's tee shots!

Anne's tee shot on the tenth!

However... she didn't always have luck... can you spot the ball below?(Half of it only as a rubbish picture!)
Spot the ball in the rabbit hole.... on the 13th!
Anyway - to the results, Lyn and Judy were third with 38 points. The winners had to be decided on Countback as both pairs had 44 points! The winners were Michelle and Ros, pushing Jean and Val into second.
Well played everyone!

Our Ping Winners

Vets/RollUp/Australian Spoons

Vets Knockout Final

Sonia played the Bronze final of the SW Vets at Truro today and it was a very close contest. Her opponent, Liz, from Perranporth ran out the winner on the 16th despite Sonia playing to handicap Liz put on an outstanding display of putting.
It was a very good match; the Silver division final was played too and afterwards all the ladies were treated to sandwiches and drinks.
Thanks to Jenny the Vets President and Georgina the Vets Captain for arranging and supervising the finals.

Well played, Sonia, you did Cape proud!

President's Cup

President's Cup

The President's cup was played today. In fact there are three cups; ladies; men and seniors.
The competition is a stableford and the ladies went out in four groups of three with a shotgun start. The weather was as still as it could possibly be! The sun broke through a couple of times but mostly it was quite murky and sticky.

Scabious?
The spring flowers really are gorgeous at the moment - the bluebells are still giving some colour though they have almost finished; the campion and foxgloves are beautiful and the little blue flower.

Near the 17th tee

Ladies playing the first

Hils and Lyn on the 18th
Like yesterday - today was perfect weather for golf. It doesn't mean we played perfect golf but at least we had a chance.

There were some good scores posted, with 7 ladies within four points of each other.

There were 35 pars today and 3 birdies!

It is interesting to see where they happened; seven ladies parred the 9th; five ladies parred the 6th(!!!!); four ladies parred 11 and 12, and three parred the 4th and 16th. The most difficult hole was the first today.
Ruth had 7 pars; Bev 5; Sue D 4 plus a birdie and Claire 4. If only we could have more still days!

To the results - Sonia, Jayne and Sue D each had 33 points, with Sue coming out on top on countback and so taking third place.

In second was Ruth with 35 and winning the trophy today was Lyn, also with 35 and deservedly winning because of her fabulous back 9 of 20 points!

Well played everyone - for the full Ladies result click here.

Polglase 4

Polglase 4 - Medal

Today was the fourth round of the Polglase competition and it was a medal.
The conditions for play were just about perfect.

Springtime on the course
There were 11 ladies in the medal and Jean played a stableford.
There were four birdies on the front nine; (1,4,5 and 9) and two on the twelfth. Fran (2), Jayne, Ruth, Lyn and Jan were our birdie girls.
There were 28 pars - it really was a good day for golf! Hilary, Judy and Di had 5 pars each! Lyn had a two on the 5th!

Fran and Jayne both came in with a nett 72, with Fran winning on countback, well played ladies!  Ruth was third with 74 and Hilary fourth with a nett 76.

Medal winner Fran and Sonia.

The medal result was also part of the Polglase Trophy competition and after the necessary adjustments were made, the trophy was awarded.

This was won by Sue D.

Sue and the Polglase Trophy
Well played Sue over the four different rounds, and well played everyone today!

It was a beautiful day!

Friendly

Friendly v Killiow

Friday saw our first Friendly match played in 2016. Killiow brought six players, many thanks to Lindsay for organising the day.

Killiow Ladies eyeing up the 12th
Lindsay, Chris J, Fiona, Liz, Anne and Val represented us on a cloudy but also sunny day.

Getting ready for the 12th

First group playing the 13th

Annie's ball on the 12th

Anne is very fond of foxgloves... did she put her ball here just to see the two lovely specimens below the wall on the twelfth?

The ladies played a better ball Stableford and on completion of the rounds all the scores were added together.
Liz and Fiona on the 13th
The final score was 118 - 111 with Cape ladies winning. Well played ladies!

It was good to hear that everyone enjoyed their day.

It was also interesting to hear from the Killiow ladies that their course, and several others, have found that this year has seen a proliferation of the wretched leather jackets - it's not just us!
