Polglase 2

Polglase 2

Today was the first Polglase competition we have been able to hold this year and it was Polglase 2 - a stableford. (Polglase 1 had had to be postponed because of the awful weather last month)

The course is improving by the day and looked lovely looking down the first with the definition of fairway and rough.

Ten ladies were able to play the 18 hole competition and Sue S and Chris joined us for 11 holes.

The weather looked good... but every single one of us found it tough out there!

It was looking beautiful!

Angie and I both lost three balls each...others lost two...and clever people lost none or only one!!

Despite that it was good to be out there and three more of the greens were back in play which was great.

Our winner was Hilary with 30 points, in second was Jayne with 29 points and in third was Fran with 28. The rest of us followed on with many in the mid twenties.

Thanks to Di for coming and doing the cards.

It was hard work but it almost felt like the beginning of the season as some had turned up in shorts or cut offs ...roll on summer!

Adventurous Ladies!

Adventures Abroad

One of the great things about our group of women at Cape is the adventurous spirit we have, playing golf all over the place!

So here are some pictures from two recent forays abroad.

One group headed to Portugal...   they had sunshine but one day was particularly chilly!

Looks like you need a blanket!

Alan P was winner of the Trophy!

Cyprus was also invaded ...

...where these two reprobates came back with the betterball Trophy!

Well done all... we missed you while you were away but it's great that we undertake these adventures.

May!

 May

Not quite sure how we got to May already but here we are!

There were just six ladies available to play today - our numbers remain low with various other golf commitments having a  noticeable impact on our numbers.

It was very grey but the ladies tackled the back nine. Jayne had a two on the 17th, Chris D birdied the 14th and Fi birdied the 16th!

In first place was Angie with 17 points and then of course we needed countback to decide the next places because Jayne, Antoinette and Lindsay all had 15 points!
In second was Jayne and third was Antoinette - hard lines Lindsay!

Well done all, it was lovely to have a chat over coffee afterwards.

The 9th, 10th and 14th greens will be back in play from tomorrow which is good news.

Thursday 25th April and Saturday 27th

Thursday Front 9

Jenny came first with 19 points with Lindsay in second with 18 points and  Fran in third  (on countback from Chris D) with 17 and a birdie on the 9th!

Well done all who played, once again our numbers were reduced because of several folk being away.

Saturday 27th

Just 9 ladies were able to play in the competition and Carolyn also joined us - we just have to be patient about getting a handicap for her.

Looking over to the 12th

It was cloudy but we had some sun and the threatening clouds stayed away which was brilliant.

There are lots of daisies on the course at the moment especially in some ares, and it can make finding a ball very difficult and sometimes impossible.

Balls in the daisies

In second place was Angie with a score of 33 which included a two on the 17th !

In first was Claire who we decided must be playing a different course to the rest of us, with a score of 37!

Well done all who played.

Thursday 18th April and Dee and Ray's Trophy

 Catch Up!

Sorry about the gap!

Lyn on the 14th

Eight ladies were available to play the back 9 and we had lovely sunshine!

The shot of the day was by Lyn on the 14th, her second shot had ended up on the far edge of the proper green, and she had a really awkward chip which actually ran over the hole!

Frieda was second with 16 points and yours truly was first with 19 points...we're going to miss the huge holes on the temporary greens!

Dee and Ray's Trophy

On the Saturday we had Dee and Ray's Trophy and we managed to rustle up four teams of three. I say rustle up because we had a lot of ladies away.

As our group came off the second green Chris D stopped and was staring at the sky.
What was she gazing at?

Kites!
Initially there were two, then another two...then four more... in the end we saw twelve kites!

Fabulous to see!

It was beautiful out there and we had fun - a scramble is always an interesting format.

At the end there were only two scores among the four teams...61 or 67! Two lots of countback were needed!

Frieda, Lyn and Jenny were second and winning with the same score but a better final six holes were Lindsay, Chris D and myself.

I have to say that it was largely Lindsay's chipping in and putting that clinched it!!

Well done everyone, it was a lovely competition and thanks to Poppy for coming to present the trophy and give us all a beautiful crystal.

Lanhydrock Day 2

 Lanhydrock Monday

Monday dawned with strong winds and 40mph gusts and some torrential downpours!

First, breakfast called... was Antoinette carrying on from the night before?

😄

Possibly not... maybe it was something to do with the view from the window...

Flooded ninth green

The downpour had rattled the windows at breakfast and resulted in the flooding of the 9th green...we looked out with some trepidation but were assured that the showers were now going to miss us and that by the time we teed off at 11 am  things would be greatly improved... and indeed they were!

We remained dry for nearly the whole round... a threat of a shower happened once and rain jackets went back on briefly but fortunately it came to nothing!

The sixth hole from the tee

6the hole from above shows the challenge that lies in wait.

The course was very wet around the sixth
but Sue could not be stopped with a lay up followed by a really neat shot onto the green.

Sue parring the 6th (needless to say I lost another two balls here!)

Considering how strong the wind was we managed to complete the round without too much incident.

The fairways were wet and the ball would plug when it landed but we had the mats to play from and all things considered it was amazing to be playing!

I never tried the mat the other way up...but I think I should have!

By the time we reached the ninth green there was no sign of the earlier standing water - what an excellent job has been done with the drainage on this course.

Looking back up the 7th

We were all exhausted by the time we finished...two rounds of 18 in two days is more than most of us have done in many many months!

We all needed refreshing!!!

Not much left...

There we go...all gone now!

Many of us soaked in a bath or shower then met up in Sue's and then it was presentation time.

We had all had a guess at the number of balls we might lose whilst we played...and the winner was Liz with the figure of 70... we actually lost  68!!!

Great guess Liz!!

It has to be said that it is a certain person's special birthday this year...and she was spotted celebrating it on the course!!

Happy Birthday Liz!!!!

We also had nearest the pin on the 15th again but this time in two shots...

Nearest the pin in two...it was a just a roll from being holed!

Then to the competition proper...in third place was Hils.

Third place Hils

In second was Sue D
Second place Sue D

And in first place was Claire!
Trophy Winner!

Well played Claire!

Well done all... it was a lovely weekend. Huge thanks to Jayne who organised everything, ably assisted by Fran - thank you both for all your work.

Thanks to all for the fun and laughter - we have a very special group of ladies at Cape; we really missed those that couldn't make it this year...but it was good to be together!

Lanhydrock 2024 was a lot of fun!

Away Weekend

Lanhydrock

Saturday 13th April (the day before we headed for Lanhydrock) an 11 hole comp had been planned but the weather once again played its part.

Instead, Sue D, Lindsay and I played a few holes before the rain came in... the best part was the freshly ploughed fields as we played the fourth! Still, we had some fresh air and hit a few balls!!!

Sunday at Lanhydrock

About twenty ladies made it to the Away Days this year - our numbers a little down for a variety of reasons but all who made it had a really lovely time, it was especially lovely to have Una and Val F join us.

Everyone met in the bar area for a coffee/bacon bap or similar before heading for the first tee.

It's the other way Angie!!

We played in groups of three, it was lovely to spot our ladies out on the course in their pink Cape jumpers!

It doesn't appear so on the photos but the first tee is raised and we drive downhill towards a lake. At that point we have to decide do we lay up or risk taking a shot over the water from further back.

Folks like me are not very sensible so my second shot became one of the numerous lost balls!

Liz playing across the lake.

Many witnessed Chris L play the shot of the day (which she repeated later too!); her ball skimmed across the lake and bounced up on to the green!  Skillful stuff!!

Looking back across the first green towards the hotel.

The course itself is lovely, full of tree lined fairways...

... a lot of water, some in lakes, some in ditches!

These ditches also had an appetite for balls which they whisked away in their fast running water out of sight!

The 6th is a beautiful hole...and another hungry for lost balls!

Liz playing on to the green after clearing the water.

Laying up and then playing on to the green is the sensible option! But it doesn't always happen even then; several of us lost balls to this corner of the course.

Of course, if you avoided the water and the ditches there were the trees to contend with!

The greens were in lovely condition; the fairways were also lovely, partly because Lanhydrock protect their fairways during damp conditions by requiring each player to play off a mat on the fairways. More of which in the next blog.

We had a nearest the pin competition on the 15th which was won by Hilary - the only person on the green! Well done Hils.

Pre-dinner drinks and nibbles were in Sue S's room

The buzz of Cape Ladies could be heard all around Bodmin!

Then it was to a presentation followed by dinner.

Nearest the Pin was won by Hils

Shot(s )of the day by Chris L

And the winners of the trophy were Lindsay, Liz and Fran!

Well played ladies!

To finish day one, here are a group of lovely photos from various ladies... enjoy!

Our lovely organisers.

The day ended with many ladies watching the progress of the Masters on the TV in the bar... others of us were so tired we collapsed on beds and slept!!

Day two to follow!
