Saturday 28th July
It looks benign above doesn't it...?
Today was scheduled to be the Admiration Cup and Godolphin Goblet.
As I arrived at the club there was a massive downpour... it wasn't worth getting out of the car and being drenched, but after a few minutes it had passed and blue sky and sunshine appeared.
We had hoped that we would just have a couple of showers during the morning... but that was not to be.
There was a good turn out for the competitions (19 altogether) and off we set.
A brisk wind sent us on our way. The most amusing happening for me was up on the edge of the first green.
Judy was preparing to chip on to the green... and I was stood nearby watching... when I suddenly noticed behind her, her trolley had set off on its own accord towards the 2nd tee.
Maybe it was on a timer?
It didn't slow... it reached the tee...tried to climb on to it - (it didn't fall) - but turned itself to face down the second fairway and off it set again!!
It clearly wasn't going to stop... and it followed the neatly cut path... only one thing to do... so I chased after it! Judy shouted encouraging remarks... and eventually I caught it just before the mound on the second fairway... the speed had been set on 8!
I trudged back to the first green catching my breath! What a start to the round!
I'm afraid to say our golf after that wasn't riveting... we got very wet on the fourth/fifth...dried out a bit on six and seven and then were wet again on 8. On 9 the green was getting very wet and it was difficult to putt...
More clouds massing |
By the time we were on the 10th the rain was torrential... literally. Torrents ran down pathways and the greens filled up even more. Claire and Angie behind us on the 9th couldn't putt because of standing water... and ahead of us on the 13th the green was completely flooded.
All of the later starters decided to stop, conditions were impossible for proper golf. Most of the early starters completed their rounds despite the flooded greens.
Sue decided to abandon the two trophy Competitions and hold them another day.
So today as a straightforward stableford - the winner was Fiona with an amazing 36 points.
Sue S was second with 33 and Lyn was third with 32. Well played ladies and thanks to Di for doing the cards 😊
Brave souls all who ventured out today.
