Post-Christmas Catch Up

Post-Christmas Catch Up

Firstly, apologies for the absence of blog posts!  The weather has put paid to our regular competitions and it feels as if we haven't played since our lovely Christmas Lunch Day.

We have had flooded bunkers (now dry) and so much wind!
For the record the Birthday trophy on the 12th didn't happen because of the weather... nor did the Bring and Win on the Saturday. Some of us took a walk down to Cape for some fresh air only to discover this...
The wind had been so strong in the night that it had picked up the National Trust hut and deposited it in the car park entrance!

The following Thursday and the flag competition on the the 21st also did not happen...

The entry in our ladies competition book looks like this... nothing between the 7th December and last Saturday the 28th!                                                                                          Well  done to Jenny and Lyn for their 16 points apiece with Jenny winning on countback.

Hopefully with the turn of the year the weather will improve - we will be keeping our fingers crossed.

Though not golf, December was a busy month with  a fabulous music night with Brendan Cleary and True Foxes Music

... a fun quiz night when Peter almost Played his Cards Right...

...he should have quit at this point, still it'll be a roll-over for next time!

Claire Lucas is exhibiting some of her paintings in the function room...

...and we had a Christmas Party too!

Many thanks to these guys for all that they're doing...
..and to Leanne and Andy for the new energy they have brought to the club.

Happy New Year everyone!

11 Holes and Christmas Lunch

Saturday Christmas Lunch

Twenty wonderful ladies came and played 11 holes and were then joined by eleven others to share our Christmas lunch - we missed Ros who had family visiting so was not able to come today.

There will be lots of pictures... but first things first... huge thanks to Di for arranging the day - it was super. Tanya, Ash, James and Evie looked after us so well and Jodi and John cooked us an absolutely delicious Christmas dinner.

Thank you each.

The tables were beautifully laid up with crackers and a Victorian mask for each of us to have fun with - and boy did we have fun!

As for the golf...
The course was playing well  as shown by some of the scores! Thanks Mark and team.

Bev and Frieda both had 25 points! Super scoring.
Fran and Marion were runners up with 19 points ... we would have needed countback if it had been an ordinary competition but we were all winners in the end as Di had bought lovely prizes for everyone!

Thanks Di!

As you can see from the above we had a brilliant time!

Thanks to everyone!

Thursday 6th December

Thursday 6th December

Fourteen wonderful ladies played on Thursday - it was great to have weather which was half-decent!

Our winner with 17 points was Jolly Judy,
in second (and decided on countback of course) was Super Sue D with 15 points; following close on her heels was Fabulous Frieda also with 15 points!

Well played everyone... our 11 holes and lunch is on Saturday - fingers crossed for good weather!

Saturday 30th November

Saturday 30th Nov

Almost needless to say that Saturday's competition was abandoned before we even started - the weather forecast of gales and heavy rain was spot and we were thankful not to be out on the course.

Of course Sunday was sunny... the men were playing a Frank Wills match at Mullion and the conditions were bright and very cold. The course was wet but looking fantastic - the greens looked pristine but were slow apparently. The match was a win to West Cornwall 3 - 2  a hard fought contest.

Thursday Back 9

Thursday 28th November

Ten lovely ladies played in this mornings competition. It was overcast and grey but we had no rain and for that we were grateful!

The course is holding up pretty well when you consider how much rain we've had. There are some very wet patches (like parts of the 18th fairway) and several of the bunkers have quite a depth of standing water but all in all it was really good to be playing again!

Antoinette just beat Jenny to third place  on countback with 14 points apiece.
In second was Frieda who, despite having a bundle of fun on the 13th, came in with 15 points.
Winning today with a very good 18 points was Sue D who played very steadily. She didn't stray from the fairway which in these conditions is essential for a good score!
Well played Sue.

It was great to be out - Saturday's competition has been cancelled with another gale coming in... folk may be able to play tomorrow or on Sunday instead? Fingers crossed for the weather.

Beyond a joke.

Saturday

Saturday's competition was cancelled yet again - it really is beyond a joke...please can we have some more benign weather?

Jack Arnold

Jack Arnold

There were Ten teams of three entered for the Jack Arnold Scramble... one of the prettiest trophies in Cape's Trophy Cabinet.

Conditions were similar to yesterday but today there was one soaking rain shower that hit when we were three-quarters of the way round.

We watched its slow advance!
One delight of this changeable weather is the variety of colour in the sea and sky.

But generally conditions were good and the course looking lovely.

There were fabulous scores returned today... with first second and third all in the 50s.

In third place with 58 were Rob, Jeff and Andy L.
In second place also with 58 were Geoff P, Roy and Ray and in first place with a superb 56 were Chris W, Ed and Fran!

Fabulous scoring - there were even 8 twos today.
Well played everyone - lots of folk stayed to enjoy the delicious carvery afterwards.
Awaiting results.

Par

Par

Thirteen lovely ladies took on a Par competition on Saturday. The weather forecast hadn't been too encouraging but we actually stayed dry!
The course is holding up really well despite all the rain and the greens are improving almost daily!

Defining shadows on the 6th
Frieda and Fran both came in 1 up against the course!
A great score, with Frieda just pipping Fran to first place on countback.

In third place was Angie who was 2 down to the course... then came the rest of us!
Five ladies on 6 down, two on 7 down and two on 8!
Other than the the first three places there was really nothing between the rest!

Well played everyone - it was great to actually be out playing after all our cancellations!

As we played we noticed a huge rig out to sea - we weren't sure what it was ...  it travelled west towards Land's End.
Close up it looks like this!

MPI ENTERPRISE

The MPI Enterprise apparently - an "offshore construction jack up".

Cornwall v Rest of the World

Cornwall v Rest of the World

Saturday's competition was yet another washout with strong winds and rain, however some of our ladies played in the Sunday mixed competition between Cornwall and the Rest of the World.

Conditions were challenging for the forty players; very strong winds and heavy underfoot made it feel as though we'd played 18 holes after only 9!

As the morning drew on the wind dropped and for the second half of the competition conditions gradually improved to near perfect and we even saw the sunshine.
The course looking fabulous in the sun!
There were misunderstandings over format and bunkers (in play or not) however Roy was able to discern the winners... Cornwall!

Well played Cornwall beating the Rest of the World by six matches to four.

Thursday 7th Nov

Front 9

Six intrepid ladies ventured forth to play this morning. There was a lot of 'ummming and ahhhhing' about play but there were a couple who were keen and they managed to persuade four others to join in!

Crazy ladies!
There was an ominous cloud looming over us which seemed to be inching towards us...

but somehow it 'went up the channel' and that one missed us!

The course is very wet in places and several of the bunkers remain flooded like this one from the other day.

The views were as spectacular as usual though!

Well done everyone who played... Liz and I ran the last two holes as another cloud was looming and we were catching the edge of it while Marion and Chris J headed in from the 7th to avoid a downpour.

Marion was second with 12 points (despite not finishing the last three!) and Frieda was our winner with 14 points.

Well done everyone!
Di and Bronwen came over for coffee at the end which was great.

Saturday's competition is off because of the forecast although folk are welcome to come and play a roll up if they so wish. Sunday is Cornwall v Rest of the World!
