Flag

Flag

What a treat to have blue sky and sunshine for our Flag competition!

Fifteen brave ladies took on this interesting competition which in fact is like a medal but in another guise!!

Ready for play!

We added our course Handicap to the par of the course and played till we ran out of shots...then we marked that point on our cards. When we came in we could plant our flag on the map.

Conditions were great and the ball was running, sometimes too far where the grass had been cut more than we expected!

In the past we have often only got as far as 15, 16 and 17 with the odd player reaching the 18th.

Today was different!

Final positions

There were two clusters, one near the 18th green and the other on the first green!

18th green and Pond!

I was tempted to disqualify Di for writing her measurement in metres (I'm still back in the old days of feet and inches) but joking aside Di was on the 18th green 4 metres from the hole; Liz got closer and was just 1 foot from the hole... but even that was bettered by Lyn who was a hair's breadth from the hole! How it didn't drop was beyond us!

Fran and Jayne both had two shots left when they finished the 18th and were back on the first tee hoping to sail their shots down the fairway.

Unfortunately the wretched crocodile leapt out of the pond and caught both their balls taking them back into the depths of Crocodile Creek! They both had to drop by the side of crocodile creek to use their final shot!!! Ahhhhh!

Chris L and Antoinette also had two shots left as they stood on the first tee, Chris got to 10 metres (Chris!) past the bunker (the one beyond the wall) with Antoinette  another 7 yards further on!

First Green

And so to the first green!

Here Lindsay, who'd had 4 shots left starting the first, reached the edge of the green - pin high, 37' from the hole!

Sam had only 3 shots left as she stood on the first tee - she sailed her drive far over the wall (she drove brilliantly today), her second shot went beyond the green and her third was a great chip to within 12' of the pin!

Hilary also had 4 shots left at the start of the first and finished 9' from the pin!

Earlier Hilary had had an amazing shot on the 14th where her drive hit the bridge, flew forward and almost reached the green!

Her round today included 9 pars and a birdie!

Back to the first...

I had also had four shots left standing on the tee.. the drive ended under the wall, I chipped over and then hit a wood up to the far end of the bunker which is to the left of the green!

One shot left and an impossible stance... I couldn't stand in the bunker, I was too close and I couldn't stand out of it because it was too far away! After a lot of dithering I balanced on the edge and just hit the blooming thing. Amazingly it almost went in the hole - ending up 2' from the hole!

It is strange to think that this was basically a medal by another name but it showed (in a different way) that the handicap system is working pretty well with the majority of the ladies playing to (or better than) their handicaps.

Well done everyone!

Next week is a medal called a medal!

Lady Captain's Charity Open

 Lady Captain's Charity Open

also known as Beware The Injured Golfer!

What an absolutely glorious day - thank you Mother Nature! Even the bunker was celebrating with a pretty pattern in the sand!

There were 45 ladies entered into this Charity Open competition with a lovely number of visiting ladies.

We had a group from Falmouth; three teams from our Looe friends and then also several mixed teams with ladies from Cape playing with ladies from Tehidy, Mullion, West Cornwall and Perranporth. Fabulous to see so many players from different clubs.

It was a lovely turnout and the weather was perfect, though dare I say a little too warm on the 15th up the hill? (Although maybe that's an age thing!)

There was very little breeze - the sea was still and we had almost unbroken sunshine! What a difference from last weekend.

On  the 4th and the 12th we were reliant on Messrs Polglase and Nicholls for ball spotting! Seeing the umbrella being raised is always such a welcome sight! Thanks guys - a great job!!

Results

One of the teams from Looe won the best visitors prize with 75 points; this team of Margaret, Hermione and Penny included the only lady on the day who got a 2! Well played Penny!

Looe team winning best visitors!

In fact four teams came in with 75 points so our favourite Cape pastime of 'counting back' came into play!

The winner of the Nearest the Line on the 10th was Elsa from Tehidy. Well played Elsa!

Elsa - Straightest drive winner

The nearest the pin in two was won by Lis J from West Cornwall, she says she was "on the green for one and just missed the birdie putt!"

Well played Lis!

The three winning teams brought in scores in the 80s!

In third place with a fabulous 82 were Antoinette, Fi and Jayne - their score included 9 pars and 3 birdies! Well played you three!

3rd place Fi, Jayne and Ann

In second place with 84 points were Lindsay, Lyn and myself - this round included 16 pars!

Now for the explanation for the subtitle Beware the Injured Golfer.

Our winning team, with a fabulous 86 points, were Claire, Fran and Ros - all of whom have been injured on and off over the last month or so.

Super well played with 11 pars and two birdies!

Charity Day Open Winners Fran, Ros and Claire

The full results are on Masterscoreboard (thanks again Di).

There was also a fabulous raffle with an amazing first prize of flights to Scilly (winner Mike Hattam). This raffle raised £630 which along with the entry money raised a total of £852 for Sarah's local charities! Incredible - well done Sarah!

And also a huge well done to all involved in the fundraising effort, supplying lovely raffle prizes, selling tickets, buying tickets, inviting friends etc.

There are many a thank-you to be given;

to Sarah for organising the day; to Di  for the results and who prepared all the cards (with handicaps and adjustments ready to confirm for folk); to the green-keepers - the course is looking amazing; to the spotters with their umbrellas; to the staff at Cape for serving us out on the terrace with a lovely curry and cake and last but certainly not least to Leanne and Andy whose support for Cape is the basis of everything we do.

Thank you!

Treverven Trophy

Treverven Trophy

The Treverven Trophy is a mixed Californian Scramble -  described as a 'Step-aside' which sums up what happens if your shot has been chosen as the best one to play next - you Step-aside and the other players in the team play from there.

It was lovely to have 30 entries so we had ten teams of three. Di was a wizard with the calculator working out 30%, 20% and 10% of handicaps (from lowest to highest) and also adjusting because we played off different tees - (White for the men and Red for the Ladies except 3 and 9 where we played off yellows).

The forecast had been showing a whole variety of dampness... ranging from mist or fog, to mizzle, drizzle and proper rain and we got the lot! But we managed to get it done!

The forecast also suggested it would clear through and those lucky enough to tee off later completed their round in warm sunshine.

But it wasn't the easiest and we had to stop because of the fog at one point, however it was just a brief interval as the fog rolled away quickly.

The scores were really close!

Just 6 shots between first and last and two twos - Fiona, Pam and Dave M had a two on the 17th; Jayne, John T and myself had one on the third.

Countback was needed to separate 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places because they all came in with a score of 64!

Countback put Sue D, Roy and Keith into 4th place; Frieda, Sue S and Will were third with Jean, Geoff and Clive in second.

In first place were these rogues...

...with a score of  62.

This is the third time in a row that Jayne has won this Trophy and John has also won it three times now , so they were good team mates to have!

Well done everyone for today - for soldiering on through the unpleasant bits of weather and for playing so well!

Thanks as always to Mark and his team for the course which is in lovely condition and to  Di for all the help with cards and the results.

Next week if the Flag competition.

Godolphin Goblet and Admiration Cup

Godolphin Goblet and Admiration Cup

There were sixteen lovely ladies battling for a trophy today. Handicap Indexes of 30.5 and over were playing for the Admiration Cup, with handicaps up to 30.4 playing for the Godolphin Goblet.

The weather was overcast, a little drizzly, sunny and also breezy! A typical summer day!

There were 5 players in the Admiration Cup and it was a close contest with only 5 points in it!

Angie was third on countback over Liz; Chris L was second with 34 points and our trophy winner was Judy with a lovely 35 points!

Lovely new rakes!

In third place (fabulous to have you back!) was Claire with 35 points - this included a birdie on the 4th!

How lovely to sit and chat!

There were a few birdies to be had today but generally conditions were challenging!

It was lovely to have some time together at the end and to do the results together too. We've missed the togetherness this gives, a togetherness which perhaps we have taken for granted in the past?

Our Wonderful winners! Imagining their Trophies!

Well done everyone!

Thursday 12th Aug

Thursday Front 9

Seventeen fabulous women took to the fairways this morning for a front 9 stableford competition and some equally fabulous scores were recorded!

The morning had started with mist drifting in and out but bright sun eventually broke through and how lovely to see so many ladies out on the course.

Our winner - with 5 pars on her card was Sam with 23 points!

One shot behind her were Angie and Chris J with 22 points apiece with Chris winning on countback.

There were lots of good scores in fact with the first 9 ladies scoring  18 or more points - what a morning!

For the first time in a while on a Thursday, many of us stayed on the terrace  for the results. It was good to catch up with folk we haven't seen for a while.

Whilst we were there the Coastguard rescue helicopter came over and hovered behind the big house for ages.

In fact it was way beyond the big house hovering over the cliff at the mouth of the Tregeseal valley. Several folk stopped to watch as they eventually winched a casualty up from the rocks. There seemed to be about 8 cliff rescue folk and medics attending so they were being well cared for and we can only hope that they were not seriously injured.

This Saturday is the Godolphin Goblet and Admiration Cup  - lets hope for more good weather and more excellent scoring!

Mind the Gap!

 Mind the gap!

Sorry for the big gap in posts but I have had Tim and Bridgie here and took time off to be with them.

I've had hugs galore (two and  a half years since I saw Tim and over a year for Bridgie so I made the most of it and we had a fabulous time.)

I left you in the previous post with the Friendly against Mullion.

Since then several ladies were Pinged by the Track and Trace system - some from Mullion too so one Mullion lady got in touch because the contact seemed to be from that Friendly match and they were wondering if we were all ok. I was pleased to report that the contact who had tested positive was fine and had since tested negative with PCR tests but was still required to follow the isolation period. Most of our ladies who were pinged followed the quarantine measures that were recommended and I for one am grateful for their care and diligence.

I had become hyper-aware of the risks of picking up and spreading Covid because of the alarming rise in rates and because of my families visit. When all my family came via the train it made me even more vigilant - I have been doing twice weekly lateral flow tests anyway but felt the need to be extra careful and avoided meeting people unless I'd checked with them first.

This huge rise in active cases; my families visit and the risks it brought, plus the Test and Trace pings our ladies had received, led Judy and I to decide that we should withdraw from the Coronation Foursomes competition in Dorset.

Had we been able to go just for the day then we believed it would have been safe enough but staying overnight in the present circumstances seemed unwise. We were sad to make that decision but encouraged by the support we received from Cape Ladies after making that decision.

31st July

This was a stableford with 9 ladies entering. There were some super scores again - Hilary winning with 42 points (this included 3 birdies!); in second place was Lyn with 41 points and in third was Fran with 38 points.

Well played all.

1st Aug

This was the day of the Presidents' Cups, there were just 7 ladies who entered but with the winning score of 42 amazing points was Jayne!

Jean also had 42 amazing points and was pipped on countback and Fi had a fabulous 40 points.

Well played all - many thanks to Roy and Lyn for organising it, including lovely refreshments half way round.

Thursday and Saturday's competitions were called off because of wet and windy weather, but hopefully things will return to a bit more normality this coming week.
