League match against Bude

Bude

Sunday saw seven intrepid ladies head up to Bude for our final away match. Unfortunately Lindsay and I had both had a tummy bug so Lindsay had to withdraw from playing and i'm pleased to say that Ros was able to take her place.

I'd had the bug a day earlier than Lindsay so I played hoping against hope that I wasn't still carrying any nasties!

Many thanks to our drivers, Claire, Sue and Hils.

The weather was a bit overcast but very pleasant, the course has had some landscaping done...some mounds down either side of the first hole have defined it really well and it is enticing to the eye...they have also added a few bunkers, revetted and deep and a real challenge! The whole course was in great condition.

Our ladies put up a great fight, losing four matches to three! That really is impressive on a course we are son unfamiliar with!

Well done everyone - super proud of how everyone played!

Particular thanks to Ros who had to play 5 shots below her handicap!

Many thanks all - one more match to play - our home one against Bude at the end of August.

The Team were Hils, Claire, Fran, Sue, Frieda, Ros and me.

Coronation Foursomes, Aussie Spoons, Thursday and Kaluza Classic!

 The week of 20th July

This week was a busy one!

On Tuesday Hils and Fran played in the Regional final for the Coronation Foursomes and what a score they came in with!

42 points is amazing in Foursomes 21 points on each nine holes!

The only problem was that two other pairs also came in with 42 points ...and you know what I'm going to say...they had better scores on the back 9 so pushed Fran and Hils into third place!

What a shame (bloomin' countback!) but what a fabulous round you made us all proud!

Liz and Frieda played the regional final of the Aussie Spoons at Falmouth and returned a score of 36 points. This put them in fifth place, again count was involved but this time just between 4th and 5th, the winning score was 41 points. Well played both , that is another great foursomes score.

-----

On Thursday Lindsay and I played in the St Austell Open which was a betterball and scored 44 points!! The winning score was 47! We had a lot of fun!

Ros played on Thursday at Cape and sent me this...

There were only 7 playing today (Fran & Hils at Yeovil yesterday, & Frieda/Liz at Falmouth today). It was nice to see Jayne and also Antionette after her recent health problems.

We decided to play a stableford with 2 joker holes, to be selected prior to teeing off, with the joker holes attracting double score.

Neeless to say, there were some high scores. Lyn was winner on 28 points and I was 2nd with 26, although as usual at Cape, 3 others also had 26, so there was a lot of count back checking.

Lyn did a great job with the cards, as there was much confusion over playing handicaps and stroke indices!

Weather warm & calm but a bit dull & even a bit of drizzle early on, but on finishing, we were able to sit outside in the sun - when was the last time we did that?

Thanks Ros and well played Lyn!

Kaluza Classic

On Saturday the Kaluza Classic was played. There was a great turnout so there was a full tee sheet for this 4ball Texas Scramble.

A beat the pro challenge was on the 16th which raised  £290 for Hils and Norman's Charity! Brilliant Job!

I was sorry to miss it...more details are on Facebook if you use it and some more lovely pictures.

Well done all, particularly Hils team which won the overall prize! Well played all!

Thursday and Saturday 19th

Thursday and Saturday 19th July

Thursday was a bit foggy but it cleared and four of us just had a 9 hole practice which was good to do.

Saturday 19th

Eight ladies played a stableford in overcast but good conditions. We did have one huge shower towards the end but we did manage to complete with some good scores.

In first was Fran with a fabulous 39 points; in second was Sue D with 38 points and in third place with 37 was Lyn!
Lovely scores!

Fran played lovely golf and had a 4 for 5 points on the 14th (the old 7th). Her third shot was on the edge of the green and she putted it straight in, right across the green! Fabulous shot!

Earlier she had put two men right when they didn't shout fore as they teed off the first with their balls landing near us on the 9th. When one started arguing that his ball was "going to miss" us Fran told him with great authority to... " Stop arguing - you're on a golf course - you shout Fore!"  It was impressively delivered!
Go Fran!

It was lovely to have Sam join us for 14 holes and to see Bronwen who came in at the end and joined us for food!

Cape v St Mellion

 Cape v St Mellion

Monday 14th was our 'delayed-because-of-fog' match against St Mellion!

So instead of fog we had a very strong south-westerly blowing and, though the wind was in a different direction, the challenging round of Saturday did prove to be good practice for us.

Cape won 5 - 2 and we had a lovely meal afterwards.

The lady I played with, Katy, had a lovely sense of humour, so when a ball came over the wall next to us on the 8th tee she lay down on the grass next to it for Fiona to come and find it...

In some ways I guess we shouldn't joke about it because we know how dangerous it can be when balls fly off line...but it was refreshing to play with someone whose enjoyment of golf was the key thing...not just a scoreline.

Anyway...well played team - Hils, Fi, Sue D, Fran, Lyn, Lindsay and me.

We just have two more matches left, both against Bude, one away on the 27th of this month and the other at the end of August.

Thanks everyone!

Sydney Grose

 Sydney Grose

Saturday 12th saw us playing the Sydney Grose stableford in very strong easterly winds!

It made playing a real challenge...so helpful in one direction and like hitting a brick wall in the other, and with the course so dry the ball was running and bouncing in all directions.

However, 10 intrepid ladies entered and despite feeling like giving up after 9 holes (some of us at least!) the back nine was easier to negotiate and looking at the scoring analysis on master-scoreboard it was much easier than the front.

Most of the scores were in the twenties but we had three players who scored above thirty.

Well played to these three  - Frieda in third on countback from Sue S who was second with the same 31!

Our winner with a great 34
(22 of which were on the back 9!) was our Captain Hils!

Sydney Grose, presented by our Vice Captain Claire to Hilary.

Well done all for battling through...I was hoping  it might be good practice for our Match on Monday!

Inter Club Handicap Shield...

Otherwise known as the Bronze Shield

This County Competition for handicaps in the bronze division was held at The point on Wednesday.

The weather was hot!

The greens were fast but the round was slow! As usual! This year it was five and a half hours!

We still wonder why on earth this is a medal - a stableford would speed everyone up and put much less stress on players! At one point there were four separate groups on a tee!

The course was in lovely condition.

The winning team were St Enodoc with a score of 219; Second were The Point with 223; third were West Cornwall  with 229 and fourth  were St Austell with 231.

Cape were 8th out of the 19 clubs entered, with a score of 236. Carlyon Bay and Newquay also had 236 but beat us on countback...and we beat China Fleet also on countback too!!

Well played Fiona (who had the second best Gross score!), Fran, Frieda and Sue, plus the caddies of  Jayne, Ros, Sue S and myself.

It was a long...and hot day!

Front 9 qualifier and Club Champs

 Thursday 3rd July

July is here but not necessarily the sunshine we'd like! While of the rest of the UK suffers a heatwave we are a bit overcast!

Six ladies played on Thursday in the qualifier - the first time this week we had unbroken sunshine ...not lurking amidst fog which it had been most of the week in St Just!

Our ladies setting off down No 1

Conditions were lovely...but only one of our number played lovely golf!
Jenny's putt from the edge of the green went in and out of the hole!

Jenny played beautifully and her putting was awesome!

She scored 21 points taking first place ahead of the rest of us who struggled! Sue D was second on countback with 15 points.

Well Payed Jenny!

Club Champs 5th and 6th July

Any hopes for the sunshine of Thursday continuing were soon dismissed with overcast skies and a brisk breeze.

We all teed off and Hils and Fran got as far as the fifth hole when the hooter went for us all to come in because of the fog!

Fi, Lindsay and I were about to tee off on the fourth...were debating leaving our clubs there on the tee but decided that if the fog didn't clear we'd have to walk all the way back down the hill to get them...so we trundled up the hill behind Hils and Fran and left our clubs by our cars, Fortunately Claire, Lyn and Sue had just finished the second.

The fog was thick. We waited inside till 11 am when the Captains made a decision to call it a day. They also made the sensible decision not to try and pick up from where we left off but to reschedule the whole weekend for August instead.

So it was a disappointing day but good decisions were made.

Thanks Hils, Claire, Ryan and Rob who made the decision.
