The weather has at last brought the sorely needed rain and the course has perked up no end as a result!

The first Saturday in September (5th) was the monthly medal and WRVS trophy.

There were just 9 players available and some good scores were returned.

In third place with a nett 71 was Lyn; in second place with a nett 69 was Fiona and in first place with a nett 68 was Ros.

Botrea Bowl

Saturday 12th was the Botrea Bowl stableford competition. There were just 8 players in this competition (we have some folk away) but we went ahead despite the reduced numbers otherwise we will struggle ot get all the tophies done!

 In third place on countback was Antoinette. 

In second was Fiona also with 34 points and in first place ...was Ros with 35 points.

Well played again Ros.

PS...I was delighted to find that Claire dislikes countback as much as I do and because she wasn't in the winnings otherwise, presented Antoinette with a well  deserved bottle of wine ... great move Claire!

 August

I left you at the away match at Carlyon Bay ...so what has happened since the?

This will be a brief catch-up as I was away for some of it...

The course being so dry and difficult/impossible to play has meant some adjustments to the calendar were made including the delay of the Admiration Cup and Godolphin Goblet.

On the 15th August it was decided to do a qualifier on the Back 9 instead of playing the full course and ten ladies entered.

The winning score came from Frieda with a 21 stableford points; in second was Lyn with 20 and Hilary was third with 19. It was great to have Di out playing ...coming in fourth with 18 points! Well done all.

The following day was the Star Castle Open which Hils, Fi and Sam entered - well done guys. So hard playing in these conditions.

Abbotswood Trophy

The following weekend, the 22nd August was the Abbotswood Trophy.

There were 8 teams of four for this mixed competition sponsored by Steve and Sue Dicker. The two best scores (one from the ladies and one from the men) counted.

The glorious sunshine of the summer continued and there were some good scores considering the dry-course challenges.

The winning team were Hils, Frieda, John and Ryan with a score of 80 points

In second place were Sam, Liz, John T and Norman  M with 78 and in third were Chris L and Sue S with Cyril and Robin with 75 points.

Captains' Charity Day!

Claire and Ryan's Charity day dawned bright and breezy and showery! The course was full of teams and generally we played at a good pace. It was a 4BBB and it was lovely to have so many people playing!

When we started the sky was looking grim and threatening but the shower was only a shower and we did have some sunshine later.

The plan to have a BBQ on the terrace with the band Badikoot was adjusted and we had the presentation inside.

I didn't know the men winners but happy to say Lyn and Sue S were second with 43 points.

After the presentations there was an auction compered by Bunchy and altogether about £1500 was raised for the Gaiety Girls Charity.

It was a lovely day - huge thanks to Claire and Ryan ...and for the drinks on the way round! A very successful day, well done all.

A busy week or so...Wheeler Bowl, a medal, a knockout and our latest match.

 Wheeler Bowl Trophy

The Wheeler Bowl Trophy was competed for on Saturday 25th. There were just 6 pairs available to play and the reams were drawn on Thursday morning. This is a pairs aggregate.

The winning pair were Hils and Ros with a score of 73 points, beating Fi and Lyn on countback of course!

In third were Fran and Liz with 31 points.

Congratulations Hil and Ros, in fact well played all, it must have been tough out there in the heat and with the dry conditions. 

Medal

The following Saturday was a medal, once again played in challenging conditions and Claire running a "guess how many balls will be lost" competition!

There were seven players in all with a Nett 74 was Frieda! Lyn was second with a nett 76 and Fran in third also with a nett 76.

Desert-like!

The Lost ball count was won by Chris L who guessed that 8 balls would be lost! (She beat me on countback!!! 😂I also voted 8 but Chris got her vote in first!!)

On Monday of this week Lyn was playing in the knockout of the Cornwall Women's Vice Presidents Cup at West Cornwall.

Lyn won on the 16th! Brilliant job Lyn well played you and not forgetting your Caddie!

Away Match v Carlyon Bay

On Thursday our team were in action again, this time at Carlyon Bay where they achieved a great result halving the match 3.5 to 3.5! 

A huge achievement when playing our away matches!

Well done to the team...Claire, Fran, Frieda, Hils, Lindsay, Lyn and Sam!

Well played,,,just one more match to go, against Carlyon Bay again, but this time at home on the 24th August.

Thursday 23rd July

 Thursday Front 9

Today, for the first time in a long time, there were enough ladies to play a competition!

10 people played (two on the flat back but the rest on the front). Only 7 holes were available to play as the groundkeeping staff were completing the work on the third green wall. 

They have replaced the rabbit hole riddled bank with a lovely stone facing. 

It looks super smart - we are all hoping the changes bed in well and the rabbits stay well away from the area.

The winner of the competition was Antoinette with a fabulous 17 points, with Frieda in second with 15.

Lovely to have more folk playing again including Sue D after her ligament challenges.

Sydney Grose and League match v Point

Saturday 18th saw the playing of the Sydney Grose Trophy. This is a singles stableford competition and we played once more in hot sunny weather with a nice breeze.

The course is so dry and looking like it has done in the past in August! We could do with some gentle overnight rain...I stress the overnight as its been lovely to have had settled weather for quite a while!

The one drawback of this dryness is that on several holes it makes finding the ball almost impossible because it has bounced and run so far - particularly on the 3rd and 5th, but also on some of the others.

However, despite these challenges we had some nice scores in. Lyn and Frieda in third and fourth both with 35 points; Ros in second with 37 points and our well deserved winner Fi with a lovely 38 points.

Match v The Point

Claire had requested some spotters to help us out in our match on Sunday because of the experience of the last few days and the challenges of 3, 5 and 11 in particular.

We were so appreciative of these extra pairs of eyes! Many thanks to Lindsay, Di, Brian P and John P. you were so needed!

Cape won the match 6 -1! Well done team! 

It was lovely to have Sue with us at the start and providing our bananas!

We only have two matches left now, both against Carlyon Bay - one away and our final match at home.

Coronation Foursomes and Aussie Spoons Area Finals.

Area Finals

Tuesday was the area final for the Coronation Foursomes held at Yeovil. Lindsay and I were representing Cape and probably did a better job on our practice round than on the competition round. 

The course itself is lovely and we did have a breeze which was very welcome in the heat.

There are some really interesting holes including the one below...which though it doesn't show in the picture has a big drop from the tee to the green! A fabulous hole.

For some unknown reason we were  annoyingly the final group out, playing in the hottest part of the day! 

Anyway, enough of the excuses, we didn't play well at the start but had a decent back 9 and came in with 31 points.

The winning score was 44 points from a team with handicaps of 1.8 and 16.1! A brilliant combination as they parred and birdied their way round 12 holes of the course, and were one over on each of the other 6!

That's fabulous golf!

We were 34th out of 65 teams and were a bit frustrated and disappointed feeling we hadn't done ourselves justice...but that's golf!

Maybe no practice round next time!!!

Aussie Spoons

Then on Thursday Hils and Fran were up at Honiton for the Aussie spoons area final. 

There were 26 teams entered and FRan and Hils scored 36 points - playing to handicap - great on a new course. The winning score was an outrageous 46 points!

Well done all. The heat hasn't made playing easy although as Frieda says we shouldn't complain after the awful winter we had!

Polglase 4 Medal

Saturday dawned bright and hot again...the heatwave continuous!

There were only six ladies who played today. The course is dry and very fast and with the wind we had it made conditions a real challenge!

Our cars said the air temp was 32 degrees...no wonder it was tough!

Claire had told us that the Polglase competition was all to play for and so it turned out!

The winner of today's medal was Fi  on countback from Hils. They both had a nett 79 and Fran was in third with a nett 81.

This meant that we ended up with a tie for first place in the Polglase trophy! Fi and Fran both have 28 points which means that they will need to play an 18 hole play off!

Well done everyone today, and particularly well done to our winners and Fran and Fi for their consistent scoring in the Polglase competition.

Inter-club Handicap Shield

Wednesday 8th July saw a team from Cape play in the County Handicap Shield...once known as the Bronze shield.

It was hot...and it was slow!

 Fi, Fran, Frieda and Lindsay were the team, (supported by their caddies, Angie Ros, Will, and me).

What a round it was, copious amounts of water were drunk and splashed in an attempt to keep cool. Umbrellas and sunhats were definitely needed and somehow the team survived!

There were 19 teams from all over Cornwall in the competition and I think all teams had to wait on every hole. In some ways that may have been a blessing in that heat!

The 4th at St Austell

Lindsay scored a magnificent Nett 66 which tied for first place in the individual nett competition (she was placed second on countback).

Fi was third in the gross scores, but receiving second prize because of the lady ahead winning the best Nett prize!

The three best nett scores of each team are added for the team competition and Cape had a total of 219.

Truro also had a total of 219!

That is where your fourth player in the team comes in...and we were one shot better than Truro!

So...

Cape last won this back in 2016... when Chris L, Jayne, Michelle and Bev played at Looe (you can look back on the blog for it)

So massive congratulations to the team! A real team win in really difficult conditions!

Thurdsay 9th

Well done to all who played on Thursday morning; Chris L, Chris D, Judy, Sam, Jayne, Annie and Angie! It was too hot for me to venture out in it again so particular well done goes to Angie having caddied yesterday!

Lovely to have more playing on a Thursday morning again.

Club Championships 2026

 Club Championship

Day 1 - the 4th of July

Nine of our lovely ladies were able to play in the Club Champs this year and we were rewarded with decent weather.

It was overcast but very warm and muggy and there was almost no wind!

The course is looking lovely  and actually getting dry as though we were in August!

We played in three groups of three with gaps before and after us which seemed to work quite well.

After the first round, Hilary was in first place with a gross 84, followed by Sam and Fi with gross 89 and me a gross 90. 

That meant that Hils Sam and Fi were in the final group on Sunday. Fran must have a special mention as she had a two on the third...missing a hole in one by inches! Well played Fran!

Day 2

Sunday dawned very like Saturday - perfect conditions for golf and we went out in our new groupings of three.

Once again we had gaps in front of and behind us...the men did eventually catch up but it seemed to work fairly well.

As we completed our rounds we collected by the 18th green and watched our ladies finish.

We then collected the cards and entered them on the computer to keep the results a surprise for most!

It was fabulous to have Sue back to watch the ladies finish the last couple of holes...looking really well too!

When the scores were tallied it was really close for the gross winner...just one shot in it!

Hilary had a total of 171 and Fi was in second with 172! What a contest!

So Hilary is our Club Champion and Fi is our best nett winner  by miles! (Actually by 7 shots from Lindsay!)

Match against Looe and Cornwall Captains v Devon at Plymouth

Cape v Looe 

The team headed for Looe on Monday for our next match.

It was overcast but pleasant and the team put up a great fight.

We halved the match three and a half games each!

Super well done everyone.

The team this time were Claire, Fi, Fran, Hils, Sam, Ros and myself.

Boringdon Park

The following day was the Past Captains of Cornwall playing Devon under Hils' leadership.

We had a fabulous contest on a great course (Boringdon Park in Plymouth)  with delicious food afterwards...and a win to Cornwall 3.5 to 2.5!

 So a successful day all round!

It was fairly windy and the 16th green was on a little plateau...dropping off to a pond!

Mel (from Falmouth) parked her trolley up by the green and when we finished the hole she couldn't find it!!!

It had blown off the side of the green and down into the pond!

Oh dear!

Fortunately we managed to retrieve it with team work and though a bit smelly and wet, nothing was damaged!!

It was a lovely day - thanks Hils for all your organising!

Thursday and Kaluza Classic

 June 25th

Thursday morning dawned bright but very windy however 6 of us met at Cape and just played a few holes using buggies!

There were lots of white horses on the sea, proof of the strength of the wind though we didn't need that as proof.

Still it was lovely to have Sue S back playing and Judy too!

So good to have you back!

Saturday 27th Kaluza Classic

Saturday's Ladies comp was given up for the Kaluza Classic which is run by Martin Kaluza and is a Texas Sgramble.

There were 19 groups out on the course, some mixed teams, onle ladies only team and a lot of men's teams.

Martin had arranged for Longest Drive on the 2nd which was won by Claire, well played Claire!

Nearest the pins were on all the par 3s but none of the ladies got near enough, the wind definitely made a difference.

The winning teams were all men's teams but we have it our best shot!

Carmen Payne

Eleven lovely ladies played in today's competition and Jayne joined us also to play her first round in a while as practice.

The fog of first thing lifted and though it was damp at the start the sun came out and it was lovely.

The rough was quite wet after the rain of yesterday and our feet got a bit damp!

There were two twos today...Fi had a two on the 8th and Claire had a two on the 5th! Well played ladies!

There were four ladies with 32 points; Ros, Fran, Liz and Lindsay but second place was taken by Fi with a lovely 36 points with Jenny our winner with 37!

Away Match at St Enodoc

 Wednesday 17th June

On Wednesday seven of our lovely ladies headed for our latest league match against St Enodoc.

The first hole at St Enodoc

St Just was in thick fog so we were a bit anxious about conditions but everything was fine in the end. There was a bit of damp in the air but it was warm so I think we all ended up in tee-shirts.

The course itself is in fabulous condition and the greens were wonderful. Very true, faster than ours but not by masses partly because of the damp I think.

We were fortunate to all be getting shots as they had a lot of good players out.

St Enodoc is long and my watch had me down as walking about 7 miles altogether...in my case a lot of the time scaling the sides of the steep dunes while we looked for my ball!

The dunes were covered in wildflowers and it smelt gorgeous as we scrambled  over it, but it could be very tricky to get out of.

I'm happy to say that the rest of the team were not as wayward as me!

The result was a win to St Enodoc 4 -3. 

So three of the team won - absolutely fantastic, and in the others games, three of them went to the 17th and 18th holes! Very hard fought!

We missed Sue very much...(laid low with her ruptured achilles) but were very pleased to fight as hard as we did.
