Aussie Spoons

 Saturday 13th June

Australian Spoons

We were welcomed with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze for the Aussie Spoons foursomes stableford competition.

It really was beautiful out there.

There were only 5 pairs available to play and there were some good scores.

Fi with Ros and Claire with Lyn both had 35 points, but our deserved winners were Hils and Fran with 38 points and going on to represent us in the Regional final. Well played you two.

Well done everyone!

Baron Rose Bowl

 Baron Rose

Thursday 11th June was the Baron Rose Bowl Competition, this is a 36 hole foursomes medal!!

Our amazing team was Frieda, Fi, Sam, Lyn, Hils and Fran!

This wonderful team played in rain and wind...and yet somehow they are still smiling!

Hils and Fran, Sam and Frieda and Fi and Lyn were the teams and their scores totalled was 472 (157, 157 and 158).

There were 18 teams representing Clubs across Cornwall and our girls score was only beaten by one other team!  And only by one point!

China Fleet had a total of 471!

WOW!

What an amazing result.

I think this is one of our best scores ever! Well played team! A superb result and hast off to you all for battling the elements so well!

Ooopsy!

Thanks for the pictures Sam!

Update

 Update

Saturday 6th June should have been Polglase 4 but it was blowing a hooley and it had to be postponed... almost 60 mph gusts are not conducive to golf!

The Thursday before (the fourth) was also a non starter because of the weather!

What an odd year we're having - and it has felt so cold over the last few days...a few of us played in the Land's End Open on Sunday 7th and the weather was dry...but layers needed to keep warm!

Tuesday 9th

Tuesday evening saw a lovely get-together of 19 of our ladies!

It was a pretty full house as only Claire, Judy, Di and Jayne were missing!

We met at the Barbican Bistro in Penzance and in true Cape style we had a fabulous time!

Taking pics usually leaves someone out...like this one...

But we had a volunteer who took one of us all!

And of course....we had Sue trying to keep warm!

It was a fabulous evening, many thanks go to Sue D for arranging it for us - it was also lovely to have Sarah and Bronwen back with us for the evening!

Polglase 3 to Coronation Foursomes

 Polglase Three

The 16th May was the Polglase Par competition. This is where we play matchplay against the course! You can see from the picture it was grey and overcast and we did have a little shower but it didn't stop us!

Ten of us were able to play and there was a runaway winner although the next 5 players were within one shot of each other!

Who beat the course?

That was Fran who won 3 up!

In second place was Lindsay who was two down, then Claire, Liz, Antoinette and I were all 3 down!

Well done everyone but particularly Fran with that super win!

Thursday 21st  May was foggy in St Just but I was away up at Cubert visiting my brother where the sun came out! I believe it stayed foggy in St Just most of the day!

It was also foggy on Saturday 23rd when we should have been playing the Wheeler Bowl - so this has been postponed till a later date!

Foggy here...but actually over 30C in London!!!

The heat eventually reached us and it was hot from Sunday till Wednesday!

Thursday ...where is the third tee?

But Thursday 28th was also foggy; 5 of us turned up so we went over to the practice are and hit shots to the assorted flagged 'greens'. This was huge fun with Chris L, Lindsay, Sam, Jenny and me...while we were having fun with this the fog lifted!

So then a few of us played some of the front 9.

Coronations Foursomes

Saturday 30th May was the Coronation Foursomes and the weather was perfect! At last, warm sunny and just enough of a breeze for us to be comfortable!

Six teams were able to play in this R&A Foursomes Stableford competition where the winners go through to a regional final and if you win that - like Sue S and Lyn did, then you get to go to St Andrews for a grand final! What a joy it was to watch them play there!

The competition today was very close with Lindsay and me coming out on top with 40 points...beating Claire and Lyn by just one point!

In third were Fi and Ros who beat Frieda and Liz on countback (36 points)

It was the perfect day to play... a rare beast at Cape!

11th May League match v Looe

 Cape v Looe

Moday 11th May saw the lovely ladies of Looe come for our next league match!

It was still a bit breezy but conditions were good.

The team won 6-1 which is another fab result!

Well played everyone, the team were Captain Sue, Fran, Frieda, Hils, Lyn, Ruth and Sam.

Thursday 14th was wet, very blustery and cold again so no-one played!
Hoping for better weather on Saturday for Polglase 3!

May 2nd and Cape v Polzeath

May

Saturday 2nd was going to be a medal but the forecast for heavy rain meant we cancelled the official competition however the day turned out better than expected so a few of us went and played 9 holes for fun!

It was grey and overcast and the rain came in a lot later - but it was good to have a practice again!

Our match against Polzeath was planned for Thursday so a couple of us had a bit more practice on Wednesday morning and the weather was beautiful!

Thursday 7th saw the team head to Point at Polzeath where we were made very welcome.

The course was in fabulous condition and we were very taken with the remote controlled mowers which were doing a fantastic job!

All of us struggled a bit despite the lovely condition of the course and we lost 6-1!
Well done team, it's always more difficult when we play away from home.

We enjoyed a very nice meal and then headed home.

The team were Captain Sue plus Fi, Fran, Frieda, Hils, Ruth and Sam.

PS And I hear six ladies played at Cape too including Di! Good to know you're back on the course!

May 9th

On Saturday we played the medal  delayed from last week and we had nine of us playing.

Most of us struggled a bit but we had one awesome player!
Well played Lyn who came in with a Nett 66! Fabulous score - well played.
In second was Liz with a nett 74 and in third was Lindsay with a Nett 76.
Well played guys.

Lindsay's 'hole in one' on the 7th!!

Past Captain's Competition

Past Captains

Monday 27th April saw five of Cape's past Captains travel to Carlyon Bay for the County Past Captain's Competition.

The weather was absolutely glorious and the course was in fabulous condition.

There about 56 ladies playing and the Cape ladies were in the final groupings.
Hils is Captain of Captains this year so was  not playing but was our host for the day.

Carlyon Bay may be similar to Cape in that it is close to the sea...but it so different to Cape. The course has a very open feel and one of our ladies loves that aspect in particular!

A couple of winners were Ros who had the best Bronze score of 40 points and myself who had the best front 9 score for silver players of 20 plus a two on the 11th hole!

But nothing could compare with Lindsay who won this trophy for the second time!

Lindsay beat everyone who played with a stableford score of 43 points!

Fantastic play!

Well done - a course you clearly love playing on!

Dee and Ray's Trophy

Dee and Ray's Trophy

What a glorious day we had for this lovely trophy competition.

The Dee and Ray Trophy is a Texas Scramble with drawn teams of three players (high, medium and low handicaps ) and taking a minimum of four drives each.

The weather was simply gorgeous, with a warm sun and no wind! We all ended up in tee shirts even if we started out with a few layers on!

Just four teams were able to play and it was particularly lovely to have Angie back playing her first 18 hole comp.

The scores are usually good in this competition and today was no different. Each team received 15 shots except one who received 17 so it was evenly matched.
There was a lot of good play including a two for Liz on the third; a host of pars all round - 34 between us all plus 3 birdies!

In second place, and with the lowest gross score of 77, were Claire, Sue D and Chris L with a Nett 62.

Just pipping them with a Nett score of 61 were Fran, Lindsay and Liz!
Well played guys!

All in all it was such a lovely day!

League v St Enodoc

 League v St Enodoc

Monday 20th saw us play our first League match of the year, at home against St Enodoc.

They seemed to think it was a bit breezy (it was a bit!) and they found the greens slow compared to their own.

In fact the lady I played against said that their fairways were as fast as our greens!

I'm happy to say that our individual match ended on the 12th hole!!!

The ladies were all actually good company and other than complaining about the greens were good to competitors. Unfortunately only two of them stayed for the meal which was really disappointing.

Cape didn't lose any of the matches - two were drawn on the 18th hole - so we won 6 - 1 which is a lovely way to start the year.

Well played everyone in the team. which was ... Fi, Fran, Frieda, Hils, Ruth, Sam and Captain Sue D.

Our next match is away at Point.

Thursday 23rd April

Thursday was another lovely sunny day but extremely windy!

Just five of us turned up to play and we played two mulligans and in our group also added in the fun of choosing the club of someone else to use on the 3rd!

So Fi and I chose a 7 iron for Sam, and in the end we all three hit a 7 iron and they were all really good shots!  One just short of the green, one on the middle of it and one just left! It showed us what we can do in a tail wind!!!

Sam and Chris D were following on behind - all credit especially to Liz whose trolley had blown over three times on the first hole!
Our winer was Sam who scored 18 points...it was tight between her and Fi till the last two holes!
Lots of fun, thanks all.

Still Catch up!

 Thursday 16th April

For me, Thursday was one of those chaotic days when you feel at sixes and sevens!

We played the back 9, playing 10 and 16 off the yellow tees. It was a lot of fun and is something I think everyone wanted to repeat! It was lovely to have Angie and Jenny back playing with us 😀
In fact Jenny won with a fabulous score of 22! Brilliant score!
Well done all.

In the afternoon I had the delight of playing with a visitor from Bath (a neighbour of Keith's).
She plays at Lansdown and absolutely loved the course - it started to rain as we finished but it was fun!

Saturday 18th Polglase 2 Stableford

Thirteen ladies were able to play in the Polglase 2 competition, it was lovely to have sunshine again and some were even in cut-off!

What a spectacular course we play on!

Once again there was a group of four men out in front of us which is sometimes frustrating. The course seemed fairly full when we were playing which was  actually lovely to see.

In third place on countback from Hilary was Frieda with 30 points.
In second with 31 was Fiona and in first place with a really fabulous 36 points was Fran!
Well played Fran, super play.

Easter and beyond!

 Easter and Beyond!

Easter demands with family visiting meant that I missed the Eggstravaganza and Jamie Crocker competition over that weekend...

However, eight ladies played in the Eggstravaganza with Lindsay winning the biggest Easter Egg with 33 points!

Hilarywas second with 32 and Fran was in third with 29!

Well done all...

The following day was the Jamie Crocker competition, I don't have all the details of the scores but Liz and Sam were third, Lindsay and Fi second and Fran and Steve Revill first were some of the prize winners!

Since then we had a very damp Thursday when no-one played.

The following Saturday had very blustery winds and the competition was shortened to 9 holes for a practice round.

Normal service should be resumed now the family have gone back!!!

Ladies Away Weekend!

Sunday 29th March

Bowood Park

Sunday morning - clocks change day - the Cape Ladies headed for Bowood Park for our Ladies away-days trip!

Everyone arrived in really good time and met for coffee in the bar area, then headed out in groups to play a singles stableford with secret partners for the final result!

As usual we kept a record of lost balls too! And there were quite a few!

The weather was overcast and a bit damp at the start, turning to rain on the back 9 so everyone was a little damp when we finished! Especially those who teed off later!

Lucky Frieda!!

The course was in fabulous condition with wonderfully wide fairways - we could still miss them though and could find ourselves in the rough or behind trees or both!

There were some lovely scores recorded (10 ladies had opted to put in cards for handicap - thanks go to Di back at home for entering all the scores for us both on the Sunday and Monday!)

It is lovely to play a course that is so different to Cape - offering different challenges.

Along with the rain it was a bit windy too but we all looked forward to better conditions on the following day as the forecast was for unbroken sunshine!

In the evening we met up as usual for pre-dinner get together, and then headed to the dining area for our meal.

It was absolutely lovely to have Val with us, and Una too. There was lots of catching up to do and the evening shared many laughs.

Monday 30th

Well...what can I say? We expected to be playing in lovely warm sunshine...but the wind was so strong! It ended up being harder to score well despite the fact that it was dry!

Once again many put cards in for handicap, 11 of us today, which was great!

You can see how well wrapped up we were despite the sunshine!

Once again we enjoyed the forgiveness of wide fairways and big tees.

There are some interesting holes at Bowood, this one which runs along the valley floor, has water to one side, trees on the other and then in front of the green a babbling brook runs across.
Such a pretty hole!

We crossed a little covered bridge to reach the green.

So another good but challenging golf day was enjoyed by all!

In the evening we had another lovely meal and the presentation.

Winning the lost balls competition was Jayne!

The longest drive and nearest the  Pin on Day One were won by yours truly!

On Day two, Longest Drive was won by Claire

And Nearest the Pin was won by Hils herself!

The secret pairs competition played on the first day resulted in Fran and I in third place...

In second place were Hils and Frieda

And in first place our very worthy winners were Lyn and Sue S!

Well played Both!

The Individual Spring Break trophy was a close run thing other than for the winner!

In fourth place on countback with 31 points was Sam who also provided us with these lovely photos 🙌

Also on 31 points in third spot was Sue D!

...and so it continues... in second place, also on 31 points was Fi!

Well done you three!

But our winner, with an amazing 35 points was Sue S!

This was a fabulous result, especially as Sue had been feeling unwell!
Brilliant, Sue, well played and one hundred percent deserved!

What a lovely evening, and a lovely weekend. Many thanks to Hils for all the organizing!
