Bronze Shield
June 21st... the Longest Day... the Longest Round... and it really was!
Four brave women were willing (along with their Cadddies) to tackle the Bronze Shield at Bude.
A Rant!
Eighteen Cornish Clubs were represented by what the CLCGA describe as a 'small field' of 72 players... if it takes SIX hours to complete a round of golf with a 'small field' my heart quakes to imagine what it would have been like had there been a large field!
Cape players teed off alongside ladies from Mullion and Falmouth, at just after 12 (already about 10 minutes later than scheduled). The round proceeded with long waits before every shot and waits on the tee of sometimes 10 minutes... it was frustrating to say the least. There was no chance to establish a rhythm.
The round took 6 hours to complete.
Why?
The organisation of these days needs looking at. A 6 hour round is just dreadful. Either the format needs adapting... or the venue should be chosen with greater thought as to its appropriateness.
Rant over!
This was a new course to nearly all of us. At the start it was cloudy with some sun but with a strong cool breeze and we had to add layers and hats! Jane was the first to step up to the tee and despite first tee nerves... especially with all the other players and their caddies watching on... Jane hit a glorious drive and went on to get a par - brilliant start.
Jayne, Frieda and Ros followed on behind... several times three of our teams were playing/waiting on the same hole.
The course itself was in beautiful condition... the fairways were cut short and the rough was the wiry type. The greens were fast and undulating, the slightest of touches would send the ball beyond the hole and sometimes even off the green. The clouds blew away and for the later part of the afternoon there was just blue sky and sunshine!

Once we were all in (sometime after 6pm) we enjoyed a nice meal (thank you for the bottle of wine Captain Sue).
The result was as we expected... a win for Bude... but what a star our Jane is!
Second in the individual competition with a Nett 78.
2nd Place! |
Well played Jane... a super achievement in those conditions.
About 7.15pm we all set off for home... I got back to my little nest just as the last of the sun disappeared below the horizon... the longest day indeed!
