Millennium Trophy
Frieda played in the Millennium Trophy final at Carlyon Bay on Monday against our County Captain Vicky from Perranporth.
"Can I go now?" |
She is a hard taskmaster!
Club cleaning! |
Conditions were good, hardly any wind and very warm.
It was nip and tuck all the way with the lead exchanging eight times!
The Nasty Ninth after which they're all square. |
The key point was on the 13th hole...Frieda had just put her nose in front on the 12th and was one up.
If you know Carlyon Bay it is their stroke index 1... a long par 5 uphill with a right-sloping fairway.
They both drove off fine...hit decent second shots...and are playing their third.
Frieda, who is in the middle of the fairway hit a 150 yard shot uphill on to the green past the flag... a perfect shot.
Vicky's ball had run into the rough and her shot didn't make it to the green... Frieda won that hole with a Par (net birdie) and in the process almost broke Vicky's heart!
But Vicky won the next hole and Frieda was back to just one up.
Then... instead of playing the 15th hole...we had to play 14A which is a nondescript par 3...this took the place of the par 5 17th which the greenkeepers were working on.
So instead of a shot on a par 5, Frieda got a shot on this little par 3... they both take four shots... and Frieda wins the hole Frieda is now two up. Both players were frustrated by this hole... to not be playing the full course just didn't seem quite right.
However.. onward... and to the proper 15th hole which, after her first wayward drive, Frieda decides to play up the 16th fairway and on to the green that way.
She plays the hole very well including a sweet chip from the rough over the bunker and is down for 5 nett four... Vicky can't match that and suddenly the match is over!
Hands were shaken and sighs of relief all round as the ladies who had come for the Past Captains Committee meeting had all trekked out to watch the final holes and were waiting behind the next tee!!
It was a hard fought match and Frieda the deserved winner with such great play.
Well played Frieda - Millennium Trophy winner 2022.
Friendly v West Cornwall
There was more good news coming from Cape itself with the Friendly against West Cornwall.
Lindsay lead the team to a fantastic win - the format was individual stableford adding all the scores together. This seems a far more friendly way to play than the often used betterball matchplay format!
The Cape total was 255 and West Cornwall had 202.
Well played all especially those who stepped in at the last minute - more details to follow.
