Thursday Fun!

Thursday Back Nine

Twelve wonderful ladies came to play today...with the added extra of Jean and Ros who joined us at the end.

Conditions were perfect, a grey sky but no wind!

Everyone was in jolly mood and we had a close contest!
Among the B group countback had to be used and there was a massive cheer when Marion was declared the winner! ðŸ˜Š

What are these ladies up to you may ask?

Allegedly... just adding up the numbers!

In the A group the scores were close with 5 ladies within 3 points of each other...but there was an outright winner with a wonderful score of 22 and that was Sue S (the injured golfer!) Sue had three pars and a birdie today! Super Sue!

Well played!

Di who was in second place with 18 points with Captain Sue and Ruth following with 17 and Bronwen with 16.

Well played everyone.

It was lovely to have Ros and Jean with us too. Thanks for doing the cards Ros and also congratulations for winning the Vets Vase recently. We didn't have the chance to award the trophy then so Captain Sue did it today.

Well played Ros!

While I'm at it... here's the draw for Saturday...(apologies for the shadow)

and good luck to everyone playing in the match tomorrow.

Treverven Trophy

Treverven Trophy

First Things First - a HUGE well done to  Angie for a two at Falmouth! It happened on the second hole - which happened also to be a nearest the pin... so we know how long the putt was for the two... and rumour has it... it was over 23 feet! Brilliant stuff!

Whoever has the shiny pink head-cover we have a worthy new recipient!

Treverven Trophy

It was a beautiful blue day today!

Conditions were great for golf and we had 9 teams of three players (mixed) taking on the course today.

We played a California Scramble taking a minimum of 4 drives each.

There were some fabulous scores - in second place with eleven pars and 3 birdies were Pam, Hilary and Steve D with a super score of 65.6.

In first place with 12 pars and three birdies were Fran Claire and John P!
Their score was 62.6!

Super play! Well done...

Looking at the scores overall we had 80 pars and 22 birdies between us! Well done everyone, for the full results click here.

Thanks Hils and Jayne for doing the cards and to all the men who joined us today.

League update

We have our final two league matches coming up on Friday(at West Cornwall) and the following Monday (Porthpean here).

Click here for the link to the county website League Table page.

It looks like this :-

West Cornwall 11
The Point 7.5
Looe  7
Porthpean  6
Cape  5.5

Looking at the above League table and we have a chance of staying in the third division if we can beat Porthpean at home.

At the moment Cape are in last place (out of the 5 teams) - we have 5.5 points with our two matches left.

(West Cornwall have won the division whatever happens in their final two matches.)

Looe who have played all their matches have 7 points.
Porthpean who have only got us left to play, have 6 points.

If we beat Porthpean at home we earn two points and will move above Porthpean and Looe!

That would mean that we would stay in the division as the top two teams go up to division 2 and the bottom two teams go down to 4.

If by some miracle we were to beat West Cornwall on Friday at theirs... then that would really put the cat among the pigeons!

So, lots to play for!
It would be great if we could stay in Div 3... lets give it our best shot!

Thursday 23rd Aug

Front 9

Twelve lovely ladies played the front 9 today. Conditions were good although the temperature was fresher than of late!

It was brilliant that our Angie won the B group with a fabulous 16 points! Well played!

The A group was won by Captain Sue with a lovely 19 points (including 4 pars) and in second was Chris l with a super 18 points (which included a blob!) Well played both!

With the wind helping there were some long drives, especially on the 6th and 8th ... mine even went past the wall on the 8th  ( I don't remember doing that before...?) but pride/excitement goes before a fall and I did a magnificent air shot on the next tee!!!

Such is life!

Lady Captain's Day

Nice day for golf

In good conditions we set out to play a stableford with a twist - we could choose to discount one putt, to take our partners drive on one hole and to declare a joker for double points on one hole.

All of this obviously made us concentrate as some good scores were recorded. Sue's Mum drew hidden pairs which resulted in Lyn and Di coing second -on countback of course - while the winners were Jayne and Chris J.

( In case you wonder what Chris has on her head, a few of us decided to follow the defined dress code and sport tiaras, which involved a cetain level of creativity! )

We we all pleased to see Anne, Val and Viv who joined us for an excellent meal afterwards followed by the prizes and gifts for all.

Thanks to Sue for a  lovely day.

Select Six

Select Six

There were a select few at golf this morning... 3 in the A group and 3 in the B group.

Well done to Antoinette who won the A group with 20 points (just pipping Lindsay who had 19);
and to Angie for winning the B group with 19 points... and that included THREE Blobs... just imagine...
It was lovely to have Jean playing today!

Well done everyone.

The knockout final took place at the same time... Jane and Fran v Judy and I ... it was a close contest with Judy and I winning on the 16th hole!

Thanks to Lyn for being referee 😊

Good decisions; Men's Charity and Cream Teas

Saturday and Sunday 11th/12th August

Saturday dawned grey, wet and windy - foggy even...plus rain.

Captain Sue made the excellent decision of calling off the Trophy Competition and rescheduling for another day.
Thanks Sue!

The committee however did meet... (thanks to all who serve on the committee... it is a thankless task generally... but we do appreciate what you do!).

Sunday was the Men's Captain's Charity Day and we played a Betterball Stableford competition off 90% handicap.

The day had begun with fog and rain and I think many of us had to drag ourselves out of bed... dreading the thought of getting soaked in heavy showers or peering through mist to see if we could spot the ball.
But in fact conditions turned out to be perfect!
This hole is getting bigger!

The scores were great with Frieda and Jayne coming second among the women with 43 points... being beaten by Lindsay and me with 45!!
Conditions really were super!

In the men's competition the winners were Timmy B and Dean G who also scored 45!

The Joe Churchill Trophy (for the men plus a guest) was won by Steve B and Dan Ferris with 47 points - Dan gave a good speech saying it was an honour to come back and win it.
Chris L and Norman (Manley) were second in that competition with 46 points... both Norman and Dan are now members of West Cornwall.

Thanks to Roy for arranging the day and raising money for Sue's Charity.

Cream Teas.

Sue S was hosting a Cream tea to raise money for the Gaiety girls.

It was lovely to see so many people; that cup of tea was absolutely perfect as were the scones, jam and cream ....thank you - (and the garden is looking lovely!)
Enjoying the Cream teas

Perfect Thursday

Thursday Front 9

Perfect!
Conditions today were fabulous for golf and there were some wonderful scores!

The fairways have enjoyed the recent rain!

A lovely group of women came to play the front 9 today... conditions really were beautiful.

We thought we'd spotted an adder near the hedge on the fourth... but it was just a shed skin!

The fairways were running beautifully... although not always quite taking the ball to where we wanted!

Ahhh! Rejoicing over the length of the drive on the 8th but misery for its final position!

Our winner of the B group was Lynne with a wonderful 20 points!

In the A group Liz was third with 21;

 Frieda second with 24...(which included a 250 yard drive on the 6th!);

and our winner Judy beat Frieda on Countback with 24 points!

Fabulous golf ladies!

Well played all!

Medal and Vets Vase

Medal and Vets Vase

There was a good turnout for the competition today with 16 wonderful women prepared to take on the course.

The forecast was for a very hot day... I for one was glad that it was cloudy with a light breeze. The sun did come out at the end so it really was lovely!

Conditions were well nigh perfect for golf... (some green is appearing on the fairways) we will have to see if the conditions are reflected in our scores later! There was a wedding at the club so Sue collected the cards and took them to Di for processing.

Lovely conditions

We did manage to stay for a quick drink outside... Judy was looking for a seat and was offered Chris's lap!

She didn't stay there too long...we found space for her on the other seat!

Results

The winner of the Vets Vase is Ros with a Nett 68! This included 3 birdies - well played Ros!

The Winner of the August Medal is Jane with a fabulous Nett 67! (This included 6 pars) Well played Jane.

Other rounds worth a mention were Sue S who is playing really steadily and has had a handicap cut for her performance today;  yours truly who was third with 7 pars and a birdie and Fiona who had 7 pars.
Proving how tough life can be with a low handicap is  Hilary who had 8 pars today and was equal lowest gross score of 86 and came in with a Nett 73!
Well done also to Chris L for completing the round despite the painful shoulder.
Thanks Di for doing the scores.

For the full results click here.

While I remember... Ros is collecting names for the Bronze Autumn Meeting if you're interested please let her know as soon as possible. It's on Sunday 2nd September at Falmouth.

I am sending in entries for the Silver Autumn meeting which is at Killiow on Thursday 13th September at Killiow.... please let me know asap if you'd like to play.

Almosts, No-Countback Thursday and 2019

Almosts, No-Countback Thursday and 2019

Here  are our Almosts...
or Pint and Half Pint!

Why?

Fi and Lynne almost won the Godolphin Goblet and Admiration Cup!

You certainly deserved a drink or two!
Huge admiration to you both (and the rest) for completing your rounds on Saturday.

There will be another opportunity to play for the trophies... date to be confirmed by Captain Sue but possibly in September she says.

No-Countback Thursday

Well done the 6 players who played the Back 9 today ... there were playful scores!

Angie ..scored 15 (and that included 3 blobs!) Well played Angie!

Sue S only just beat Angie... with 17 points (including a blob)

then came Jenny with 18 points (and 2 blobs); Chris L with 19 points (with 1 blob); Chris J with 20 points and our winner was Captain Sue with 21!

How did they manage that! 17,18,19,20,21!

Imagine... exchange the blobs for 2 pointers... Jenny 22; Angie 21; Chris L 21; Sue D 21; Chris J 20; and Sue S 19! How exciting would that be!

2019

As you know, January 2019 will see the introduction of some new(amended) rules.

The intention of the R & A is to speed up golf and make things a little simpler.

If you visit their website R & A you can watch videos which explain the changes. (If you click on the yellow highlighted bit it should take you there.)

We'll also have a look at some of them on here.

So, what will the changes be for on the Green?

1) When we putt we will be able to leave the flag in if we want to (there will be no penalty for hitting the flagstick with a putt)

2) We will be able to mend any marks on our putting line (not just pitch marks but spike marks too - there will be no penalty for touching the line of the putt)

3) If you accidentally move your ball  or ball marker there is no penalty - just put the ball back where it was. (We have already adopted this at Cape so we should be used to this one!)

More another day!
Happy golfing!
