Bring and Win and Birthday Trophy

Bring and Win and Birthday Trophy

Thirteen lovely ladies played on Saturday in the Bring and Win. The forecast fair weather didn't happen and we arrived to rain and cold...but our hardy ladies decided to play as soon as it had stopped and eventually we even had some blue sky and sunshine. But it was heavy going!

Off we set in groups of three and a couple of twos...

Fran's chip on to the 13th!

Because we hadn't played the Birthday Trophy on Thursday due to the cold weather we combined it with today's comp.
Waiting on the 14th

I believe everyone was feeling tired but the sun was a very welcome guest when it appeared!

The Birthday Trophy was won by Sue D with a Back 9 score of 15, winning on countback from Liz!

Well played both.

The Bring and Win itself was won by Liz with 30 points, followed by Antoinette and Fran who both had 27 points.

These three chose their gifts first and then the cards were drawn at random. as in previous years we bought a fun gift for approx £1 and put the remainder into the charity. It looked as though there were some clever gifts...well done everyone.

It was lovely to see Di, Judy and Chris L who came and joined us for coffee,  and special thanks to Chris L who supplied us with yummy mince pies which Robyn warmed up for us.

Di also told us about the birdie trophy winner...which came as a surprise!

Birdie Trophy winner!

Saturday 11 holes and lunch

 11 Holes and Christmas Lunch

Saturday dawned very cold, icy and with occasional showers. The order of play was adjusted and we had already reduced the round to 9 holes. We were playing Bingo, Bango, Bongo with the additional Bungo!

Suitably attired!

The Bungo addition to the format means that everyone that ends up on the fairway with their drive gets a point... so there are more points on offer!

We delayed the start a bit as there was black ice on the roads and we wanted everyone who wanted to have time to come if they could make it.

In the end there were 18 players which was brilliant, but we had the reminder of how risky these conditions can be with an upturned car on the corner near Leswidden, Fran and Brian's car sliding gently down their hill in Newlyn and Chris D slipping on black ice on the pavement - ouch!

But, we managed to play and there was laughter ringing across the course as folk got quite competitive!

Once back in we warmed up by the roaring fire and some had a mulled wine.

Then we had our Christmas lunch - it was lovely to all be together again with everyone looking so festive.

Frieda had a lovely gift for us all and also gifts for the first 5 places.

Of course we needed countdown to separate people with four of our number on 15 points - Frieda, Jayne, Liz and Antoinette!

In second place was Super Sue S with 16 points - Sue was the only one of us achieve the almost impossible feat of four points on one hole...brilliant Sue!

And our fabulously attired worthy winner was our Happy Hils with 17 points!

Despite some folk having doubts about the format before they started it seems to have been enjoyed by all.

It was a lovely day - thank you Frieda for our gifts and all your hard work.
We missed Marion, Sue D and Di and also Viv who had hoped to come but had to withdraw at the last minute.

Hopefully we can have lots more get-togethers like this in the coming year.

Thursday Front 11/9

Thursday 8th December

Eight ladies played on this cold morning. We shortened the competition to 9 holes after a heavy shower while we were on the 5th/6th holes.

There was an amazing precursor to the shower...a spectacular vivid rainbow.

It was great to be out despite that shower. The scores were much of a muchness except for one, Frieda had 14, I had 15 but our winner was Sam with a super 17 points!

Sam took these next four fabulous photos...

It was awesome!

Trophies!

 Trophies!

On Monday 5th December it was the County AGM and...

Sue collected our Division 1 Shield and the Play off Trophy too!

Well done to everyone who played this year and to Sue for organizing us so well!

We re-entered the League in 2017 going into Division 4... and each year we won promotion to the next Division...and this year was our first opportunity to play in Division 1 and to come out winners is amazing!

For those who like details we had 16 points...as did Perranporth!

But we were awarded the trophy because we had won more individual games than them...it was 45 individual games to us and 42.5 to them!

Incredibly close contest and every single point and half point mattered!

Well done everyone!

Brilliant achievement!

Jack Arnold Trophy

 Jack Arnold Trophy

December 4th - unfortunately there were only a handful of ladies able to play this year in this mixed trophy competition.

Cold and very grey conditions meant even more layers were needed to keep us warm!

This competition is supposed to be a drawn Scramble and should if possible have a lady in each team.

This didn't happen this year and our winning team turned out to be two men!

Well played to Lindsay Brian and Mark for second place with a nett 58 and to Frieda, John T and Malcolm for third place with a nett 63.9!

Let's hope for a return to a better supported and more competitive field next year.

Medal and WRVS

 Medal and WRVS

December 3rd

This competition had been delayed at least twice so we were hoping we would get it done at last!

Unfortunately there were only 7 playing and it's quite understandable - it was very cold and windy with it so we all needed many layers and that was reflected in our scores!

Good job we'd marked the balls!

Our winner today was Hils! WRVS Trophy winner plus a sleeve of balls from Steve behind the bar!

Well done Hils!

A change in the weather

 All change!

Not quite all change because the last week or so of November saw more wet and windy weather with the competitions cancelled...and then the colder clearer weather arrived.

Several of our ladies went to Mullion for their winter Open and although the low lying 7th was flooded the course was in fabulous condition.

Forward tee on the 7th, the fairway is to the left and under water!

Sam's fabulous pic!

Conditions for play were superb, hardly a breath of wind and for most of the time... sunshine!

How lucky were we?

So happy to be out playing without wind and rain!

Cape had two teams in the prizes... these two lovelies were fourth

and in second place were these two!
(Not taken at Mullion)

Thursday 1st December

The weather was still bright on Thursday when 9 of us took to the course to play the Back 9, this was not a qualifier because we were off the forward tees on the 12th and 14th.

Cape is renowned for needing countback but it was ridiculous today!

There was a winning score of 13 points and then 6 players with 11 points!

It turned out that Jenny was third on countback from Lindsay who came second... and the winner was Sue D who won despite snapping her driver and having a migraine!

Well played Sue!

Abbotswood Trophy and Logan Rock

 Abbotswood Trophy

Saturday saw a new format for the Abbostwood Trophy. This Trophy used to be for Thursday morning Stableford competitions but since Covid (and WHS) there have been less of us playing these so Sue D who sponsors the trophy decided to change the format.

It is now a mixed competition with teams of four - teo men and two ladies. It is a betterball and the two best scores count however one must be from a lady and one from a man.

This made for a really interesting competition.

We started off in warm sunshine, not a breath of wind and blue skies.

Absolutely perfect!

However as the round progressed the wind began to pick up and the clouds came over so having started by taking off layers because we were warm we ended up putting on everything we had!

It was great to play a different format!

The scores were perhaps a little lower than Betterball is sometimes but that is a reflection of the conditions - everyone scored less on the back 9 compared with the front!

Naturally, countback was needed to separate some scores!

Well done Hilary, Frieda, John and Paul on your win!

Many thanks to Sue and Steve for sponsoring this competition!

Logan Rock Trophy

On Sunday several ladies joined in the Logan Rock Open which was also a betterball but in teams of two this time.

Conditions were much tougher - strong winds from the start and an absolute downpour in the middle! Soaked to the skin again!

However by the time we finished the sun actually came out and we mostly dried off!

Really tough playing conditions... congratulations to Mark and Brian on their win!

Well done to those who played  and thanks to Mark G  the men's captain for arranging it and Kim and Bunchy for their part in it.

Little India!

Little India

Wednesday evening saw about 20 of us head for Little India in Penzance - Sue D had arranged an evening for us there and how lovely it was to get together, have fabulous food and great company.

Many thanks to Sue for organizing and we're hoping to do something similar again in February next year.

Thursday

Five of us turned up to see if we could squeeze in a few holes...and that is exactly what we did before an absolute downpour!

There was a huge shower as we arrived but as soon as it cleared we got our stuff out and instead of the Back 9 we headed to the first.

The storm clouds were out to sea so we kept a very close eye on them... deciding after each hole if we try and get another one in!

Fran, Sarah and I got to the fourth green and spotted a huge rain cloud heading in so we dashed across to play the 11th and then ran in... just getting in in time!

Frieda and Liz who had set off a little after us unfortunately got caught in it and were soaked through!

Still, the fire was roaring and we enjoyed a lovely coffee and chat, Di and Ros had come over to join us which was great.

We felt glad we had got out for a few holes - even Liz and Frieda!

Royal British Legion

Royal British Legion Open

This was run to raise funds for the Poppy Day appeal and there was a pretty good turn out for it.

Once again the weather looked fabulous but the wind was strong and always seemed to be in our faces!

And the rough... one of the men we played with lost 4 balls in the rough...on decent shots! That was frustrating and I know he was not alone in this!

Jayne and Hilary were in fourth with 39 points, Mark P and Brian were 3rd also with 39 points, George and Ash were second (also with 39!) and the winners were Ryan Eddy and  Alan Cragg with 41.

A generously filled beef or pork roll was awaiting us when we came in. £600 was raised for the British Legion.

Botrea Bowl

Botrea Bowl

Saturday 12th November

The Botrea Bowl had been twice delayed but at last we were able to play it!

Nineteen lovely ladies were able to play and despite the wind and the long rough were glad to be out on the course again!

There were some lovely waves to admire - more so than the golf where the majority of us found conditions quite challenging...or perhaps we are all a bit rusty!

The mild conditions continued though which was great!

There were some birdies to be had; Anne U birdied the 2nd; Angie the 9th and  Lindsay, Chris D and Fiona birdied the 12th. Our Par Queen was Hilary who had 6!

All that said, the scores for the majority were in the twenties. Angie was 4th with 30 points; Liz was third with 31; Anne U with 33 and our winner with an amazing 37 was Lindsay!

Our Lady Captain was away so Lyn stepped in to award the trophy!

Well played Lindsay!

A point of explanation...you may notice that Anne U had 35 points on the Masterscoreboard results but was only credited with 33 for our competition.

The reason was that she had put a lower course handicap on her card than she should have done. This doesn't mean disqualification (a higher one would have been a disqualification) but it means the competition score had to be off the incorrect lower handicap. It did not effect the position results.

I mention this because as from January this sort of problem will not exist in our Stableford and Medal competitions... the rules are changing and an incorrect handicap will no longer mean disqualification in these formats!! It makes it much easier for the card markers!

I expect it will be useful for us all to continue filling in the cards in full but no longer will the disqualification knife be hanging over us.  Handicaps in other formats will still need accuracy though!

Thursday 10th November

 Thursday 10th November

Wind gusts in the mid 30s did not put off thirteen intrepid ladies from playing the front 11 holes today, with two putting their cards in for handicap.

There were a range of scores...some having a nightmare and others obviously playing a different course to the rest!!!

Lyn was fourth with 17 points; Fran and Pam both had 19 points, with Pam winning on countback...

and in first place (on that different course!) was Super Sue S with 25 points!

This included pars on the second and the 5th 😄 well played Sue - that's a super score in those windy conditions!

Hopefully the weather will hold for the weekend competitions...fingers crossed!

and more...

...and again!

More stormy weather put paid to any serious golf at the start of November with more gales and heavy rain blowing in from the Atlantic...the only up-side is that the weather has been really mild so most of us have been able to delay putting on the heating!

Four of us played a few holes on Thursday before the torrential rain returned!

More challenges!

The weather on Thursday  (27th October)was a bit breezy and damp but several ladies played including two who put in cards for handicap.

Tied in third place were Angie and Chris L; in second was Chris D with 18 points and our winner was  Ros with 19 points!

Well done everyone who played.. our weather is becoming a bit more challenging ...but it is so mild still!

Saturday (29th October) was once again very windy with gusts of 42mph so  the competition was postponed again.

Holman Open

The Holman Open was held on the 30th but that was impacted by thunder and lightning and heavy rain... but two of our ladies did play.

Mark George the winner seemed to be playing a different course to everyone else... scoring 40 points while most of the rest were in the mid 20s to low 30s!

A real challenge of a day!

Ladies v Seniors and Charity Cup

Ladies v Seniors

Thursday 20th October... This year it was the Seniors who organised this competition in terms of the refreshments but the ladies decided on the format which was an aggregate competition.

There were 18 ladies who entered and similar number of men!

The seniors were winners this time with a margin of about 15 points...the actual details remain elusive and the results difficult to track down!

Hopefully it was a fun competition! Anyone with any juicy details please let me know!!!!

Lady Captain's Charity Cup

This followed on on the 22nd and was a three ball with two scores to count competition.

The weather was a bit breezy but ok... fifteen ladies braved the weather!

In third with 58 points were Frieda, Lyn and Angie.

In second with 64 were Hilary, Fran and Ros and this lovely bunch below ran out winners with 70 points!

Well played ladies!

Many thanks again to Di for doing the cards!
