Coronation Foursomes

Coronation Foursomes

What a fabulous day for golf!

There was hardly a breath of wind and it was warm - at last! Some warmth to enjoy on the course!

Eight pairs entered the competition today and what a lot of fun we had!

There was luck - like balls hitting walls and going over them; good putts like Judy's on many greens; some fluke - like finding drives sitting nicely but which were 30 yards off line and also some good iron play too.

Well done all for the competition today, it was a close run thing!

3rd, 4th and 5th each had 37 points with Fran and Hilary coming out on top on countback. (Frieda and Ros were 4th and Sarah and Lindsay were 5th)

In second place were Lyn and Sue S with 38 points and in first place were Judy and myself with 39!

So close!

There were birdies to be had today,  Fiona and Jayne on the 14th;  Lyn and Sue S on the 12th; Sarah and Lindsay on the 9th, and Judy and I on the 6th and 12th.

It must be added that we all didn't score on at least one hole! In fact between us we didn't score on 15 holes!

The course is in lovely condition and it was great to be able to sit comfortably together outside afterwards and be sociable.

Almost the end of May!

May 27th

It is almost the end of May, and we can count on one hand the days where we have had warmth!

Yesterday was one such and today was almost one!  In certain places on the course we were sheltered from the wind and it was balmy, then it clouded over and it was fresher again.

However, it stayed mostly dry for the twelve ladies who played today.

It was lovely to have Marion and Lynne back playing with us again and Chris L successfully playing without a buggy!

It obviously agreed with Chris because she was our winner on countback with 17 points.

In fact there were four ladies with 17 points!

 Well played ladies.

Points of note were a birdie for Lyn on the third (3 for four points)

and the fact that half of us didn't score on the first!

Let's hope the weather has turned a corner and that we can at last throw off some of our layers when we play.

The course is looking fabulous, thanks as always to 'the boys' for all their work on the course; and thanks also to Di for setting up the competitions for us on BRS and entering the scores today.

Polglase 3

Polglase 3 Par competition

Today was the Par competition and twelve ladies entered. Conditions were pretty good (specially compared to the last few days) with sunshine and blue sky and also some wind.

At the start we had lots of layers on as the wind was quite penetrating but we warmed up as we went round and layers were removed.

Our group seemed to hit either fantastic shots or ones we'd rather forget; it is an unforgiving format playing matchplay against the course so huge congratulations to Lindsay, Claire, Sue D and Ros who either tied or won their matches against the course.  Fantastic!

As we are all aware, Anne Jones died yesterday afternoon - our sadness is entwined with wonderful memories so if you have stories to share of Annie then please send them to me via email of Whatsapp so we can write up a special Blog post for her.  Thank you.

57mph

 Fun Back 9

Our fun back 9 competition today was cancelled because of the wind!

Wind of 40 and gusts of 57 mph meant playing wasn't going to happen. The only redeeming feature was that it was mild!

Hopefully things will improve for Saturday's Par competition!

Australian Spoons

 Australian Spoons

The forecast had heavy rain from 10 o'clock but somehow or other we ended up with almost non stop sunshine!

Ten pairs entered the the foursomes competition and we were so grateful to start and finish in the dry!

The bluebells on the 4th are looking so lovely!

In our group we certainly had some fun! It began in earnest on the 3rd hole when Frieda was about to take the second shot on the third hole. Liz's drive had ended up on the edge of the men's tee, a little behind and to the side of the white tee marker.

Frieda asked if she could move the tee marker and I said no as I believed we are not allowed to move tee markers. This is incorrect! You are not allowed to move tee markers of the tee that you are playing from... but if you end up on another tee then the markers are a moveable obstruction

Huge apologies to Frieda for the wrong info... but it resulted in a spectacular moment!

Frieda hit the ball...it hit the tee marker and flew left, high over the bungalow garden, hit the wall on the far side and launched itself either down that track or possibly back into the bungalow garden beyond! We'd never seen anything like it!

Our fun and games continued, another example is this picture!
This is the wall across the 13th! The drive decided it was going in and not coming out again!

However the 13th was also remarkable for another reason. Liz had driven the ball to just above the wall, and Frieda stepped up to chip it on to the green.
When we got there we couldn't find the ball.

After beginning our search for it Liz suddenly said...it's in the hole!
What a two!
And a two for 5 points!

I'm sure there were special moments for other players too. We certainly had bags of fun!

It wasn't really a surprise to us to find Frieda and Liz had turned out as winners. They both played really well and deserved their win.

How lucky we were to play in sunshine with just a breeze blowing.

Next week is the Polglase Par competition lets hope for more good weather!

Front Nine

Front Nine

Thirteen lovely ladies played in the competition today - and how lovely to have Marion back playing.

The weather was lovely; bluebells along the paths, a light breeze and sunshine to enjoy it all. We thought playing might be a little easier than it has been lately but that seemed not to be the case. The scores were quite subdued.

The winning score was 18, recorded by Sue S and Frieda  with Frieda winning on countback.

2Smith, Sue18 pts (17)Overall Runner-Up

Pam was in third with 17 points.

There were several other ladies who played today (but because of various commitments had been unable to play in the competition) and they too found conditions harder than they expected.

Well done everyone!

Some of us stayed for the Peter Gorton Barbecue (available this evening and tomorrow too).

It was fabulous!

So good to have these special times back.

Don't forget to check for any handicap adjustments tomorrow.

Celebrations and Postponements

 Celebrations and Postponements

Thursday's fun back nine competition was called off when rain scuppered it. The forecast had been ok, but the brighter weather didn't appear until the afternoon - however it did not stop us from getting together on the Terrace to celebrate Jean's birthday!

Thank you Jean! I think we decided that you could have a birthday every Thursday because the coffee and cakes were delightful, and it was so good to share time together.

The sun came out later and it turned into a lovely day.
Happy Birthday Jean
!

The sunshine lasted through most of Friday and then unpleasant weather returned with a vengeance.

It had been well forecast so our Captain told us in advance that the Australian Spoons competition would be postponed until next Saturday.
What a good decision that was.

No sign of the wall and waves on the Crocodile Creek proved the decision correct.

A little clearer nearer the sea but most definitely not golfing weather.

Let's hope for better conditions next week.

Polglase 1 Medal

Polglase 1

Today we played the first round of the Polglase Trophy competition. This had been delayed because of the lockdown.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous, cool breeze but warm in the sunshine.

Seventeen wonderful women entered the competition and there was some lovely golf played.

You just need to look at the results to see that!

Wonderful scores from Frieda, Liz, Claire and Lyn! Well played!

It will be really interesting to see what adjustments are made to handicaps overnight!

Shots of the day in our group were from Fran who twice 'putted' from a long way off the green with a hybrid and all but holed the ball! Two inches from the hole both times - they were fabulous shots!

There were 6 birdies; Frieda and I birdied both 5 and 9; Antoinette also birdied the 9th and Sarah birdied the 6th!

Once again it was lovely to sit out on the terrace to enjoy drinks, food and conversation with friends.

Next Saturday is the Aussie Spoons competition - this is foursomes and is open to all players with a  Handicap Index between 15 and 54.

Thanks as always to the Green-keeping staff, the restaurant staff and to Di for collating the results!
