More Tuesday Fun

Tuesday

Today twelve folk turned up to play.

We had a new format which proved to be great fun and which made us all think.

We played the front nine in teams of three - two scores to count.

Straightforward - but there was a twist.

On the first hole we teed off from the white tee, on the 2nd the Yellow tee and on the third the red tee... and then we repeated ... a Tee Waltz!

It was interesting to be playing from different places, giving a sometimes surprising views of the course.

The winners were Lindsay, Nick and Dave with a magnificent score of 40 points.

Lots of fun - thanks once again to Lyn for organising our Tuesdays.

Saturday

Medal and Vets Vase

Sunshine and a strong easterly wind were our companions on the course today. Mark had cut the greens and combined with the wind they were FAST!!

Sometimes folk were lucky... this is Sue D's ball just avoiding the bunker on the 10th!

But she (and many others) also had hard luck... the ball going in and out of the hole on this hole... and on the 17th!

Ah!  The 17th!

This was the hardest hole on the course for the medal players today!

It was not getting on to the green that was the issue... it was getting the ball into the hole.

The wind was whipping across the green and unless the ball went in the hole first time, plumb centre it ran back past where you started!

For example Sue tried over and over, close to the hole; above the hole.. next to the hole ... even going in the hole and coming out again, the ball ran back to the bottom. Eventually it went in and stayed in.

Good idea to video it for the blog... so after we finished the hole Sue tried the putt again...  and would you believe it...

You can see what Sue thought of that!

The Stableford winner was Pam with a score of 22 points.

The winner of the Medal and Vets Vase was Lyn, with a magnificent Nett 75.

No-one came close... Sue D was second with 82, and Anne third with 85.

Well done all for soldiering on  to the end!

It was lovely to have Jean join us for coffee afterwardstoday, and to see Viv on Thursday.  Thanks always to Rosemary for doing the money. We missed those of you who couldn't make it today... hope to see you soon.

Next Saturday is Invitation Day!

Thursday

Front Nine

It was another day with a good turnout of ladies ready to play the front 9.

It was cloudy and definitely cooler... a little hint of Autumn in the air, but we stayed dry and ended up quite warm.

The course seems to be improving by the day - it is looking great and the greens are better and better - all credit to Mark and his team.

The 'B' group winner was Liz with 16 points with Frieda in second.

The 'A' group was won by Sue D with an excellent 20 points; Ruth just beat Sue S on countback to second place, both having 18 points and Fran was fourth with 17 also on countback.

Looking towards the 6th Green

Across the 7th Fairway to the 5th Green
Saturday is a Medal and the Vets Vase and the following Saturday  (3rd Sept) is Invitation Day.
Monday the 5th is a Friendly against Praa Sands at home.

The sign up sheets for these and other upcoming events are on the Ladies board.

Don't forget - while we still have light evenings...

Tuesday evenings are great fun - we had 22 players this week. We start at 5pm and play 9 holes - the format depends on numbers and the mix of men and ladies. Several folk stay for a bite to eat and a drink. All are welcome.

Postponements and winners

Catch up

The match against Merlin on Thursday last week was called off because of the fog.

The Trevervan Trophy mixed competition was called off because of the forecast storm - a good move as it was hard to stay on your feet on the coast on Saturday!

Sunday's Men's Captains Charity day went ahead and was open to ladies to enter in pairs, and 4 pairs did.
The winners were Lindsay and Jayne with an amazing 44 points (and that was off those new handicaps)!
Sonia and Jenny were second with 40 points and Hilary and Sue D third with 37. Well played ladies!

Monday's re-scheduled match against Budock Vean was also called off, this time due to low numbers. We only had 4 players and we (Budock V and ourselves) decided we'd rather delay it and play with a full team if at all possible.

Ladies Invitation Day is coming up - the Sign up sheet is up on the board.

Saturday

Botrea Bowl

Today was the Botrea Bowl - seventeen ladies  came to compete.

The weather however was playing a game all of its own and our clear but cloudy start turned into a gentle mizzle... which turned into drizzle... then the odd drop of rain and finally fog!

Suddenly it all cleared and we finished in sunshine!

Spot the green!
Lindsay on the 10th
When the fog came in it was touch and go about continuing, but as we came through to the 12th it was much clearer so most ploughed on! However for some who were on the front 9 when the fog came in, it proved too thick and they came in.

Those that completed had some decent scores. Anne was beaten on countback to fourth place by Lindsay with 34 points. In third came Lyn with 35. Di was second with a fabulous 39, but our winner with a superb 41 was Jayne! Well played Jayne - a fabulous score and well deserved winner of the Botrea Bowl.

Well played all, next weekend is very busy... good luck to everyone wherever you're playing.

Thursday

Front Eleven!

Today we were scheduled to play the front 9 but decided to add in 10 and 11 as the weather was so lovely.

Twelve ladies played... in fact 13 as we were joined by Doris. Lovely to have her visiting us.

There were some great shots played today,  Frieda's drive on the 4th was about 20yds short of the green and on the 9th she had a three for 5 points! Brilliant!

Frieda scored 24 points, coming second just pipping Sue D on countback!

Our winner was Lynne who scored 25 points! One of her great shots was her second shot on the 5th which took her to a short putt for par. Well played indeed!

We have the Botrea Bowl on Saturday and then a busy week ahead.

There is the Friendly against Merlin on Thursday; some are playing at the Falmouth Open on Friday; Saturday is the Trevervan mixed Trophy, Sunday the Men's Captain's Charity day which ladies can enter in pairs and then on Monday we have another Friendly, the rescheduled match against Budock Vean.

So it's all go!

Happy golfing!

Falmouth

Falmouth

Monday was a bright and beautiful day and six of our number went to Falmouth to represent Cape in a Friendly.

Our team; Ruth and Liz; Sue D and Chris J; Lindsay and Di.

The format chosen by Falmouth was Fourball Betterball Matchplay and that is exactly what we played.

The result of the match was a win to Falmouth two games to one.

The course was in fabulous condition, the greens were great - a good speed but not too fast.

Personally I hadn't played the course since the changes were made and it was a new course for Liz. I was sad to see the loss of the old 8th - the par three that ran down to a beautiful cedar. It was a lovely par 3 with a tricky green and I was sad to see it go. I had never played 10 because it was being worked on, nor the new 11th.
The course was playing very well.

However, I really must apologise to our team for my ill-preparedness for the format. I had hoped we would 'soften' the format and play as we did at West Cornwall. It was not to be, there was more than a little confusion and I am sorry for that.

Fourball Betterball matchplay is not a format that most of the team had played before - the nearest thing is probably our knockouts.

The lowest handicapper plays off scratch and  "concedes strokes to the other three players based on 90% of the difference between the full handicaps".

For example, in our match I played off scratch and Liz played off 17!

Simply playing off 90% would have had me playing off 15 and Liz of 32... a difference of 17 so it is actually the same either way. It just feels harsher. I'm sorry for my angst.

Liz hit a fabulous drive on the first when she out-drove everyone by 50 yards!

Our next Friendly is at home against Merlin on Thursday 18th August... the format will be our choice so if you have signed up then let me know what you would like!

Saturday

Sydney Grose

Saturday saw the playing of the Sydney Grose Trophy - this is a stableford competition and 18 ladies came to play.

Your blogger was absent but has some details and looked at the results!

(I had a 9 hour drive home on Friday - by late afternoon at Exeter I decided to come back over Dartmoor to avoid the traffic and it was wonderful!)

To the competition there were some great scores! Sonia tells me that it was a funny old day - misty, foggy then humid and sunny!! But it certainly didn't deter the golfers - there was one Eagle (Chris J on the 12th!); five birdies ( Hilary on 9 and 11, Sonia on 10, Bev on 12 and Jan also on 12) and there were 45 pars!

The winner was Lindsay with a fantastic 41 earning a cut of 1.2 and now playing off 25! Well played Lindsay - fantastic!

Sydney Grose winner Lindsay
In second place was Hilary with a score of 39! That's a gross 83! What a star!

In third place was Di with 35 points - this may be a story of what might have been as there were 4 blobs in there - I look forward to hearing it -  great score!
There were then 4 players all on 33 or 34 and all also had blobs so these scores must also tell a story.

One story... Sonia's perfectly good drive on the 17th simply disappeared... was it a marauding rabbit?

Well played everyone...

Finally... the amazing Man Engine Puppet in St Just.
