Sunday 25th November saw the playing of the Jack Arnold trophy competition.

This is a Texas scramble with 13 teams of three playing including 6 ladies. 

Conditions were good - a chill breeze at the start, especially if you were on the front nine (it was a shotgun), but with sunshine. No complaints there!

The winning team came in with a score of 60.7! That was Chris W, Cyril and Jon H, well played guys!

In second place were Lyn, John P and Steve P with a score of 61.5.

There were 6 twos altogether... I believe Frieda chipped in for a two on the 5th (that lesson at Tehidy is reaping dividends! ) and Lyn's team had a two on the 14th.

Well played everyone - it was lovely to be out there in good conditions... the next few days are looking wild so it's good to play while we can!

3 Ball Aggregate

Saturday 24th November

Sixteen lovely ladies came to play the three-ball-aggregate competition that Sue had organised for today. We played in threes (obviously!) but we were two ladies short so Sue did a draw to identify 'sleeping partners' to make up the numbers. Judy and Antoinette were chosen and their score was added to the appropriate team.

The weather was threatening and we had a couple of slight showers but generally the weather was good - mostly because the fierce wind of the last few weeks had dropped.

The scores were close. 

The winning team was Antoinette, Liz and Fi who had a combined score of 89 points.

They had 8 pars between them - scoring particularly well on the back 9.

In second place were Frieda, Sarah and me...with a score of 87! We similarly had a much better back 9 than front, and included 4 pars and a birdie in the round.

In third place were Bev, Chris L (and Antoinette) with a score of 86!

This included a two for 5 points on the 12th hole! We need to hear details of that Bev! Well played!

There were some birdies too... Sue D on the third and Judy and Lynne  on the 12th. Lynne's was for 5 points - so she was awarded the pink headcover! 

Well played everyone - it was good to be out there.

Thursday 22nd November

Thursday Front 9

'Eleven Pipers Piping'  ...oops ..not yet! The only thing that was piping was the wind in the wires!

Eleven wonderful women played Cape today... against 44 mph winds and windchill which meant we were well wrapped up!

The wind made play, walking and keeping your trolley upright very difficult!

Judy was quietly putting on the third green when her trolley took off and sped down the slope... thank goodness for bracken or it'd be heading for Scilly!

The wind has been so strong over the last week or so that the marker post at the back of the 7th now resembles a gallows!

Considering how difficult conditions have been the course was looking great. 

There were only three pars to be had today... Judy parred the 2nd, Lyn the third and Frieda the 9th!

 Our winner (on countback) was Lyn with 12 points, followed by Ruth and Judy who both also had 12 points.

The winner of the B group was Lynne with 7 points. 

Today we put into practice the 2019 Rules for the first time. 

We had met yesterday evening at Pam's to have a discussion about how the new rules work and today we had our first trial run.

Most of us used them in one way or another; either using the knee high drop (which feels weird!) or marking out (a pizza slice!) when taking relief from a rabbit hole... to not being penalised for a double hit and leaving the flag in the hole!

At the moment the rules feel a but unwieldy... a bit like new shoes that aren't quite comfortable ... but you know they will be more comfortable eventually. We just have to keep at it.

Sue has said the New Rules will apply in all our play from now till Christmas... it gives us all the chance to try them out before they begin in earnest on Jan 1st 2019!

Many thanks to Pam for hosting yesterday (all 18 of us); for providing us with a warm and comfortable venue away from the lightning storm... for our refreshments and also this beautiful display of flowers - they are beautiful - thanks Pam.

Well done everyone for battling on today... it was tough but we're made of stern stuff!

Holman Trophy

We had gorgeous sunshine, a strong breeze and an absolutely amazing sea to accompany us in the Holman Trophy today.

Thirty Six players entered of which seven were women. It was a shotgun start and it was simply beautiful out there.

The ladies winner was Captain Sue with a Nett 78 ( this was on countback from yours truly!)

The Holman Trophy was won with a Nett 69! John Sellors was out on his own... the next closest score was a Nett 75 (and countback had to be used to decide 2nd 3rd and 4th places).

Gorgeous Cape

Today was the fourth attempt at running the Godolphin Goblets Competition (predictive text called it Giblets in a WhatsApp message and it seems quite appropriate for this year!)

The wind was so strong it made playing extremely difficult; the decision was taken to stop after 9 holes... and leave the Goblet competition for this year.

There was a lovely turnout of 18 ladies to face the 50mph gusts - well done everyone who took it on!

As we reached the 7th green Judy and I were on opposite sides of the fairway... this happened to my trolley...

...and Judy was facing the same thing on her side...

...I turned back to right my trolley and put it somewhere safe and when I looked back to see how Judy was doing she was standing on the wall behind the green with arms outstretched 'looking' out to sea - what on earth? Had she played her shot and lost the ball?

No...she was looking for the scorecard which had whipped out from her holder and taken off across the green - it flew the hedge and eventually settled in the bracken and gorse below the path to the fourth!

Bye-bye card!

The most popular score today (half the players) was 9 points...proof positive how tricky the conditions were.

Four ladies had twelve points so countback was needed to split them... in fourth place was Captain Sue and in third was Fabulous Fi.

In second place with 13 points was Lovely Lyn and in first place with a lucky 15 points was Rascal Ruth with the errant scorecard!

Shot of the day was awarded to Liz for chipping in for a 6 for 2 on the 2nd hole!

Well done all... Holman Trophy tomorrow - similar conditions are forecast!

Super Seventeen

Thursday 15th November

The back nine beckoned us today and a Super Seventeen women came to take it on. 

The weather was grey - very grey and a strong wind up top although mostly sheltered from 12 onwards.

Three of our ladies were in the B group and the winner, after a little hiatus (for which my apologies) was Angie! 

Angie was also awarded the Eclectic Trophy for the B Group - well played!

In the A group there was some good scoring, our winner was Fabulous Fi with a fantastic 21... including a two on the 13th which meant she was awarded the sparkly pink head-cover for shot of the day... she seemed 'delighted'!

In second place was Lovely Lyn with two pars and a birdie and 18 points;  and in third place (on countback from Captain Sue), was Captain-to-be Di with 16 points.

Other scores to note were Liz who had 3 pars (on 10,12 and 14); and in a not so impressive sense Ros and I couldn't manage double figures... I wonder why?

It was lovely to have Viv out on the course and Jane also joined us after playing 11 holes with Chris.

It was lovely to have so many playing... and we had a jolly time over coffee... Fi really was not delighted to have the pink head-cover - she's hoping to pass it on on Saturday!

Godolphin Goblets on Saturday, Holman Cup on Sunday which is now a Stableford.

Next Wednesday we have our informal Rules Evening... 7-7.30 at Pam's... see you there.

A time to be happy...

Mark and the new fairway mower... it's making a difference already 😊...

...and also...

with special tyres on the tractor they have started to tine the greens... with pencil tines.

Huge thanks to the team for all their work... such a difficult job when short of equipment...  fingers crossed for continued progress now.

PS Oh... and the Cornwall v Rest of the World competition on Sunday was great fun... the weather was good if a bit windy... but it was great to be out on the course. The ROW won... but only with the help of Cornish players (there were not enough ROWs)... so win win really.  

November Medal

November Medal

Fourteen Intrepid ladies ventured forth on to the course to play the Medal today. The weather was rough but at least it was dry!

Our scores on the first hole ranged from between 5 shots and 10! And that was fairly typical for the round... 

However with the wind behind it was possible to hit massive drives!

Frieda's drive on the second reached here!

 The wind did not ease in the slightest which made playing very tricky. When you managed to reach a distant green it was often followed by a three or four putt!

In the end Sue made the decision that it was not worth battling on and it was made into a 9 hole competition.

Taking off the handicaps shots there were only about 10 shots in it!

Our winner was Hilary with 39.5 shots (this included pars on the 3rd, 7th and 9th); countback was needed to separate second and third... Claire was second (with pars on 6 and 9) and Captain Sue was 3rd, both had 41 points. Frieda was fourth with 43 points.

Well done all, it's been lovely to see more ladies out on the course over the last few weeks.

Sue then awarded several trophies.

Firstly, the Individual Knockout which was won by Claire in a fantastic match against Fiona.

The Carallack Plate was won by Fran.

The pairs Knockout was won by Judy and myself in a close game against Fran and Jane.

 Sue then awarded the eclectic prizes....

The winner of the Eclectic Cup (best nett score) was Lyn...

and the best gross scores were both Hils and me... the shock is that we have had exactly the same gross score in the last two eclectics!

And finally... a toast for all today's winners!

Thursday Back 9

November 1st

Today we met to play the Back 9 and what a lovely turnout! Sixteen wonderful women came and played and it was the first round of the winter eclectic too.

Conditions were ok although we did have one heavy shower... but it was soon gone and we warmed up again!

In the B group Angie and Marion must get special mention - they both parred the 12th!

Well played... but the winner was Lynne who scored on every hole! Well played Lynne.

In the A group our winner was Jenny with a lovely 20 points - this included a blob on the last but a birdie on the 12th!

Well played!

In second place with 19 points was Jane who began her round with a birdie on the 10th and included a couple of pars too.

In third place was Chris J with a solid 18 points, this included 3 pars (and a blob on 15).

Well played each.

Other notable scores were Di and Judy who both birdied the 12th; Sue S who parred 14 and 17 and Sue D who had a two on the 12th - 2 for 5 points -  an eagle!

Well done all.

Sue mentioned the upcoming competitions and also the Christmas Dinner which will be at the Club - cost is £18.50 for 3 courses and £15.50 for two - the sign up sheet for the 11 hole competition which precedes the lunch is up on the board.
