29th April

Front 9 Qualifier

We started off today in absolutely perfect conditions.

No wind and it was mild so jumpers and jackets came off but a shower gradually moved in and we needed brollies and jackets back on!

However there was some lovely golf played.

Sixteen ladies entered the competition and our winner with 22 fabulous points was Amazing Angie! Absolutely lovely to watch.

In second place was Brilliant Bronwen with 20 points - pipping Demon-Putter Pam on countback.

In fourth place was Lindsay with 19 points!

Well done all!

It feels so good to be stopping for coffee and a chat after golf...even when we needed rugs!

There are plans afoot for regular music and the quiz night is back on Monday 17th!

Also, Peter Gorton is back too - that's brilliant!

The forecast for Monday is wet and windy so the planned British Legion Scramble has been postponed, it has moved to the 31st May.

Mizuno Pairs

Mizuno Pairs

What a fabulous day we had on Monday for the Mizuno Pairs Competition.

Sunshine, blue sky and a gentle breeze till the last few holes.

The Competition was a Better Ball Stableford playing of 85%.

There were 77 pairs entered with a good representation from Cape and a lovely number of visitors.

The course was playing beautifully - many thanks to the Green Keepers - and several of us stayed afterwards to enjoy the terrace.

Mike Dann and John Tweedie were the overall winners with a fabulous prize of a trip to Malaga, with a four night stay and 3 rounds of golf at La Cala. They had scored 45 points! Brilliant!

Brian and Mark were in second place with 44 points! Well deserved!

Our first lady was Pam who was fourth playing alongside George, with another score of 44 points! Well done Pam!

Our next Lady was Frieda who was in 10th place playing with John and scoring 41 points.

Fiona and Will were in 12th, also with 41 points; then came our first all female team of Hilary and Sue D who were 20th with 39 points.

Sharing 39 points were Jayne and Antoinette in 21st place.

Liz and Bev scored 38 points; Lindsay and I scored 35 and Fran and Claire scored 34.

Thanks to all at Cape for hosting this fun competition; to the green-staff for presenting the course in such lovely condition; to the volunteer starters Di and Lyn and the car park official 'extraordinaire' Geoff Preece.

Fabulous job all round!

I hope it can return next year?

Windy!

Windy Days

Both Thursday morning's fun back 9 competition and Saturday's Greensome were cancelled because of the strength of the wind.

It was a real battle to even walk in it and the five ladies who decided they would play a few holes on Saturday, struggled to keep their trollies upright. Our Captain described it as 'Wild' but Sue D still hit some awesome shots. Well done you two and Liz, and Chris J and Pam for braving the elements.

It is such a shame to have had dry and sunny weather but just too much wind to enjoy playing!

Monday is the Mizuno Pairs competition with about 150 players tackling the course, many of them visitors. The met office is suggesting winds of 17mph with gusts in mid twenties, about half the strength that it was over the last few days.

Next Saturday is Polglase 1 Medal.

Dee and Ray's Trophy

 Dee and Ray's Trophy

What wonderful conditions we were given for the Trophy competition!

Sunshine and blue sky, a little breeze which was cool, but nothing like the freezing ones we've had lately.

Thank you Mother Nature!

Twenty ladies entered the competition and we were in teams of three or four.
We haven't played a Texas Scramble for so long - and it was lovely to do so.

No pressure, just fun.

The course is looking fabulous and the edges of Crocodile Creek have been turfed so it's looking super.

The green-staff have done such a fantastic job - the course has never looked better.

There were some lovely scores today; seven birdies and an eagle! A two for Chris J on the 5th - all her own work; and a two - an eagle - on the 12th for the team in second place!
Well played guys!

I must report Liz's skilful use of the bridge on the 14th to get her drive on to the fairway!

The winning team were Angie, Antoinette, Ros  and Sue D with a rounded score of 62.
In second were Claire, Jayne and Jenny with a score of 63;

and in third were Bev, Bronwen, Lindsay and Lyn with 64.

Congratulations to the Trophy winners!

Next week is a Greensome - another enjoyable format.

It's lovely to see everyone again, and enjoy coffee or a drink on the terrace afterwards.

Thanks Di for preparing all the cards and doing the results for us, you're a star and thanks also to Fran for sorting out all money - we're not the easiest!

Thursday Morning

Thursday Morning

Today was our first Front 9 Qualifier! Eighteen ladies played using the amended front 9 score card and handicap adjustments.

Once again we were treated to blue sky but also cold winds!

There was also a new duckpond... if the other is crocodile creek perhaps this is alligator alley!

This one is behind the red and yellow tees on the fifth  (but in front of the white tees).

Hopefully it will not affect us on the 5th - it would be quite a shot if it did - but it might have an impact when playing the 6th!

This is the first time we have done a qualifier using the new WHS system; it will be interesting to find out tomorrow how it impacts on our handicaps.

Countback was needed of course... in fourth place on countback from Fran was Tonia with 16 points.
In second place was Pam with 17 points, beating Jenny on countback; and in first place was Lindsay with a lovely 18 points.

Well done all! Don't forget to check EG tomorrow for any changes to out handicaps.
Dee and Ray's Trophy is on Saturday, Di is kindly preparing the scorecards for us which is great.
Thanks Di and thanks Frieda and Di for doing the results today.

Altogether it was a very enjoyable morning, many stayed for coffee afterwards on the patio - the glass surround is now in place.
Some of us even stayed for lunch!
Delicious!

Friday morning.. I've just checked the handicap adjustments from yesterday's competition.

5 Handicap Indices were unchanged;
4 more were altered but you remain in the same bracket so the Course Handicap remains unchanged.
1 lady has had a reduction
and 8 ladies have gone up.

Please check via the EG app; Masterscoreboard or on the Just Handicap page on this blog.

PS My handicap has increased by one. When I look back over my scores it is clearly a reflection of how I have been playing.  I am hoping the extra shot (and maybe another one back at some point) will help me score better and then hopefully, when I'm back in the swing, I can bring the Handicap Index back down again.

Polglase 2

                                                                      Polglase 2

The sun shone but what you cant see in the picture is the fierce and biting wind!

Eighteen ladies entered the Polglase 2 Stableford competition and the conditions proved very challenging!  There were no holes on which we all scored, with 64 NRs between us once again averaging over 3 each!

Jenny and Sue D were the only ones among us who scored on every hole! Well done you two!

The pond was being filled (and also worked on) so we had to avoid the men and dumper trucks up near the second green or when teeing off from the first! It's looking impressive.

Our winner on countback was Liz with 32 points. Angie was in second and Jenny pipped Sue D to third on countback of course!

Well done all who soldiered on through to the end.
There are four handicap changes which impact on Course handicap so please check yours before you play next.

I for one am hoping for a Saturday without any wind - but at least it was dry.

The new pond - the picture below was taken Friday evening.

Thursday Front 9

 Thursday 8th April

Yesterday we played the front 9 as a practice for a WHS stableford qualifier.

There were more new things to take in of course!

Because of the new WHS system both the front and back 9 have their own slope index which is why there are different adjustments to make to our handicaps and different stroke indices too.

One approach is to think that the front and back 9 are no longer two halves of our 18 but two separate 9 hole courses - I found that a useful way to think.

Once we'd made these adjustments and were out playing it seemed a much fairer system than the one we tried out in 2017.

We will have to see how it impacts on our handicaps when we enter the scores next time but it certainly appears fairer than the before.

Thanks Di for all the work that has gone on behind the scenes. The WHS system has created a lot of work and calculations but hopefully will be a much fairer system for everyone.

The only photo today is to show the progress of 'Crocodile Creek' - the new water feature.

It looks almost deep enough to swim in!

Golf Access has started, with youngsters coming on Sunday afternoons and adults on Thursday afternoons. A lot of fun seems to be taking place and progress made too!

The course is looking absolutely amazing. Huge thanks to greenkeeping staff and also a reminder to everyone to smooth the sand in bunkers as best you can after you've played.

A reminder: England golf say that preferred lies in bunkers is 6" and is acceptable while Covid restrictions are in place. You are not allowed to smooth the sand before you place it; of course you can play it as it lies if it's ok.

Stableford

 3rd April 2021

Whoop Whoop!

Back on the course and playing  a competition!

Fifteen lovely ladies entered the Stableford and a few extras played 9 holes.

We had blue sky and sunshine and in the picture it looks perfect...

...but there was a very cold wind blowing - especially on the exposed parts of the course.

The wind, combined with a lot of us being very rusty through lack of play, made it challenging to say the least.

Only one of our number managed to score on every hole. The rest of us averaged 3 NR's each!

Our winner was our NR-Free golfer - Frieda with 36 points.

In second place was Antoinette with 33 points and in third, beating Sue D on countback, was Sarah with 32 points.

Well done everyone for achieving what we did. It is only to be expected that we will struggle after months of lockdown.

Please check your updated handicaps, they are updated overnight by England golf so please check the day after you have played. We enter the results and determine winners etc straight away but the handicaps are not adjusted until overnight.

Most of us remain in the same bracket for our Course handicap but there were four changes.

Huge thanks for the Greenkeepers - the course is looking amazing!

Next weekend is Polglase 2!
