Thursday Front 9

Last day of May!

Fourteen wonderful women from Cape played the front nine this morning.

We had woken to mist (thick fog in PZ I believe) but conditions were fine for golf at Cape.

A huge cheer resounded round the patio when we heard the name of the winner of the B group... well done Angie!!!

In the A group, as is typical of us, (Countback Capers should be our name) we had 2 ladies with 15 points (Lindsay and Lyn); three with 16 points (Antoinette, Sue D and Frieda) and three with 17!

In third place was Di who had a four for 4 on the fourth and also parred the 5th; in second was myself with pars on the 3rd, 5th and 6th;  and our wonderful winner today was Liz - who parred the 9th and had three 3 pointers in her round!

In fact there were a good number of pars today; Sue D parred 4, 5 and 9; Lindsay parred the 6th and 9th, holing a wonderful long putt from just off the green to get that par on the 6th! Lyn parred the third, Jenny the 9th.

Well played everyone, Polglase 4 on Saturday - a medal; and the Presidents' Cups on Sunday.

Early morning starlings!

Trevelyan Trophy

Trevelyan Trophy

Sunday 27th May saw 31 golfers compete in the Trevelyan Trophy Scramble.

Conditions were a little perverse, misty, wind, the odd ray of sunshine... jackets and jumpers came off...and were then needed again!

However... we did not get wet!

Mike reminded us of the background to the trophy before the presentation.

Well played to the winning team who posted a score of 58!
Yes!
58!

Super play by Fran, Paul F and Dave M.

In second were a team of four; Frieda, Bill, Rob A and Brian; they scored 59.3!

In third were Sue D, Martin U and John T with 60.2!

Well played everyone.

Aussie Spoons and stuff!

Stuff

Firstly, well done to these three gorgeous girls!

Fiona, Antoinette and Bev went to the West Cornwall Open and WON!

Well done!

Winning ladies modelling their prizes!
Whilst these ladies were winning at west Cornwall, Lindsay, Sarah, Liz and I were having huge fun at Truro in Mo Hammond's RCH Charity Day. We didn't win anything but had huge fun...the format was so lovely... a four-ball with just two scores to count.  Very enjoyable :-)

Aussie Spoons

7 Pairs of ladies played in the Aussie Spoons today, with two others having completed their rounds earlier in the week.

Conditions were lovely although the wind was swirling.

Foursomes always throws up some interesting shots... we find ourselves in different places, playing different shots.

In second place were Liz and Antoinette with a score of 34.
In first were Frieda and myself with a score of 37 (and that included 3 blobs!)

Well done everyone.

We are sending our love to Val G who had a very nasty fall on Thursday. She has a broken arm and cut leg.  We're all hoping she has a speedy recovery.

Cape v West Cornwall

Cape v West Cornwall

We had beautiful weather for the fourth of our league matches - blue sky and sunshine; the wind picked up towards the end.

Our matches were close, but weren't good enough for a win... Cape lost 4 matches to three.

Well done all who played, especially to Fran and Jane who had to go out again and play their knockout afterwards!

Cape was represented by Di, Fran, Hilary, Jane, Lyn, Sue D and me.

Wheeler Bowl

Wheeler Bowl Trophy

May is such a beautiful month for wildflowers. The bluebells are prolific and the foxgloves are shooting up and beginning to show their colour.

Fourteen women were available to play in the Wheeler Bowl today.
The format is a Foursomes Medal and we were blessed with absolutely perfect weather.

The course was looking great but we all still found the rough difficult! Finding the ball in it was often time consuming and playing out of it not always guaranteed!

But despite these challenges our winners brought in a score of 77.

Well played Jane and Lyn!

In second place with a score of 80 were the two Sues... Sue D and Sue S!

Well persevered everyone; particularly Di who stood in at the last moment...

Thursday 17th May

Thursday 17th May

Nine lovely ladies played the back nine on Thursday.
The weather was perfect and there was some good scoring. Sue S pipped Lyn to third place on countback with 15 points.
In second place with 16 points was Jenny and in first place was Jane with 17 points .
Well played all.

The ironing!

Perranporth

Bev and I went to the Spring County Meeting at Perranporth yesterday on a glorious day.
The weather was perfect, warm sunshine and a gentle breeze... nigh on perfect  conditions for Perran or anywhere for that matter.

The groundstaff had been out early putting special St Piran flags on the flagsticks.. and they had ironed the greens!

Ironing the greens!
For those who've played on ironed greens before you will know what we faced... for those that haven't... imagine putting on glass!

It proved to be almost impossible to play a ball onto a green and keep it there...and then the putting itself was quite an experience.

The slightest of touches and the ball ran and ran.
Needless to say we three putted frequently...and sometimes 4 putted!

The course itself was looking fabulous, the wispy rough was covered with buttercups, cowslips and birdsfoot trefoil... so playing with a yellow ball to make it easy to find was a ludicrous idea!
(I ended up playing with one of those bright pink ones from The Brison Babes/Tregeseal Tramps competition!)
The dunes also smelt beautiful with wild thyme and all the flowers... you can tell we visited the rough quite often... and often stayed in it for some time!

We both felt we would like to have started again after we'd played the first few holes because we would have adapted our club choice...but it was good experience, especially the putting! Makes you realise how good the pros are with the putting in particular!

We thought that it would have to be the Perran players who would win because of the challenge of getting it on to the green as much as the putting and so it proved.
Well done to them.

Bev birdied the Par 5 17th... and between us we had some pars... but we both took over 100 shots on the round (along with a few other ladies) and ended up with Nett scores in the 90s.
Would I do it again?
Most definitely... but spend even longer on the putting green than I did...

ps We also had a great catch up with the ladies from Looe!

League match v Polzeath

Cape v Point at Polzeath

Overnight my kitchen (and probably everyone else's who played yesterday) was festooned with all the contents of my golf bag; clubs, tees, balls, card holder, gloves... you name it, all spread out to dry because it was wet right through!

The fan heater did the trick and early Sunday morning it could all be reloaded into the bag... and we set off for the third or our League Matches - this one away at the Point at Polzeath.

Last year's match we lost 4.5 to 2.5 so we knew it would be tough contest.

There were only a few shots given or received and it turned out to be a very close match.

Glorious conditions at the Point

Many matches were decided on the 18th... and we ended losing 4 matches to 3! Two of the matches were halved!
It was really closely fought and Cape Ladies did us proud.

The weather was absolutely glorious and the Polzeath team made us very welcome.

We enjoyed a lovely meal afterwards.

Both Point and Cape joined the league last year and we both seem to be holding our own in this environment!

We're 'doing great', let's keep it up!

The team at Point were Di, Fran, Hilary, Jayne, Lyn, Sue D and myself.

Oh yes!

As we teed off on the 10th a veritable rabble of ladies wandered up the edge of the fairway toward us!

A bunch of more disreputable looking individuals I never did see!

Libby (my playing partner who runs all the golf at the Point) sighed... "Oh... they shouldn't be walking here...  it's so dangerous..."

And who were "they" ?

A wonderful group of girls; among them were Chris L, Judy and Angie on their walking trip!

Libby explained to me that it was often happening;  the walkers had followed a Public Footpath sign which Point are not allowed to alter even though they want to - it's a County Council sign!

Anyway - it was wonderful to see the girls... and they had a lovely meal at the Point!

Polglase 3 Par

Polglase 3 Par

Saturday 12th May ... the Polglase Trophy Par competition was on!

Par is the competition when we play individual matchplay against the course, either winning, losing or halving holes against the par for the hole plus any handicap shots we received - it feels a tough format.

Fourteen lovely ladies came to play.

The weather looked good...
...beautiful blue sky, a bit of a breeze and a few fluffy clouds.

Mmmmm...   but what is this?

After 9 holes this cloud loomed, moving slowly towards us.
We tried the usual mantra of "It's going up the channel"
but it wasn't.
It was moving at snail's pace toward us... and when it arrived it slowed to a stop. The temperature dropped a few degrees, the wind whipped up and it poured!

And it kept raining, most unpleasantly, until we finished the 18 holes.

We were all soaked!

Some of us (me!) lost the will to search for balls that went off line other than give a cursory look...it really was horrid out there. It made the second 9 very challenging.

But most soldiered on and our winner was Hilary who was 4 down to the course - pretty impressive in the conditions!

Sue D was also 4 down so countback had to be used to separate them!

In third place was Jayne who was 5 down.

For the full result click here.

Well done all ...time to go home and dry out EVERYTHING ready for tomorrow!

A Cup!

A Cup Indeed!

Why was this cup sitting on our coffee table at Cape on Saturday you may ask?

Well, it is the wonderful Cup that Jane won at Newquay on Thursday in the Bronze Spring Meeting!

Well done Jane!

County Bronze Meeting

Bright sunshine and a cool wind greeted the ten Cape Ladies in the County Bronze meeting at Newquay.

As we had more representatives amongst the 32 players than any other club, we hoped to win something between us.

Our pairs were the last to start but we we all ready to go..

Sue had wished us good luck with a remender to take our buckets and spades! Some of us did some earth moving in the bunkers but no-one produced anything of architectural merit in the form of a sand castle.
At least there were nice views to enjoy whilst we helped our partners to search for balls amongst the daisies.

When the results came in we did indeed have some prizes. Being Cape it naturally involved countback.

Jane won the trophy on countback from Di with both scoring 33 points.

Thursday 10th May

Thursday 10th May

Reason to cheer...

The rough cutter has arrived and 'the boys' are doing a sterling job getting the rough cut! Thanks guys... we can see the difference already!

Front 9

Part one of this entry is about the five lovely ladies who played the front nine at Cape. The weather turned out lovely although there was a fair wind blowing.

Val and Annie playing on to the third.

Antoinette and Pam played together and had a very close fought contest - both playing very steadily... and with Pam scoring one more point than Antoinette.

Val, Anne and I played together... Val was so steady and Anne got into the swing over the last few holes and they both scored the same...
and for some unknown reason... I parred 5 holes!

It was just one of those days... and I did have some luck...
..how the ball stayed where it was is beyond me!
I've decided I should play with Val or Anne more often if I play like that - thanks ladies! (I scored 19 points!)

The reason we were so few and far between is that 10 of our number went to Newquay to play in the Bronze Spring Meeting...  and Lyn and Sue D were playing a knockout.

A second reason to cheer...

Well done Jane for winning at Newquay today in the Bronze Spring Meeting... winning on countback (of course!) pushing Di into second place! Fabulous work both!

Congratulations!

Friendly v Falmouth

 Friendly v Falmouth

Wednesday saw us venture up to Falmouth for the first of our Friendly matches. We were unsure what the weather would be like but the rain held off till after we were finished and though there was a fresh wind we managed ok!

We received a warm welcome from the Falmouth ladies and due to some traffic issues (which affected both home and away teams!) we teed off a little late.

The format was a betterball stableford - matchplay - off 90%. This meant the lowest handicapper in each group played off scratch and everyone else got 90% of the difference.
You will know from of old that I consider this is a very challenging format for a friendly but everyone soldiered on to the last. Fran and Liz were the only team who won... but two of the other matches were close - going to the 17th and 18th holes, so well done everyone.

10th hole

I was very sad to see the changes taking place to the par 5  10th hole. I thought this was a beautiful hole... magnificent trees on the right and the left. For me it was the prettiest hole of the course... but you can see in the photo above the changes that are taking place.
A new green is being built...  just beyond the bottom of the hill and the present green and surrounds will be developed for housing. Several of the Falmouth ladies said how sad they were to see these changes.

We enjoyed a good meal together before we headed home in the rain.

The result, a win to Falmouth 3 matches to 1; our teams were Fran and Liz, Bev and Bronwen, Chris J and Frieda and Angie and myself.
Thanks all!

League match v Polzeath

League match v Polzeath

Sunday 6th May...

...early morning fog hiding Cape but the course was clear!
Huge sighs of relief all round!

Conditions were actually nigh on perfect for golf... warm sun and the lightest of breeze... and Cape women did not let us down!

Cape won 5 1/2 to 1 1/2 ... a resounding victory!

Well played everyone... our guests loved the course but the rough was a huge struggle.

Gary has said that the rough cutter will be back on Thursday... keeping fingers crossed for that!

I am happy to report that the food provided for us was absolutely fine and was enjoyed by our visitors. Our thanks to George.

The Cape Team was Claire, Fran, Jane, Lindsay, Lyn, Ruth and Sue D; well done all.

May medal and WRVS Trophy

May Medal and WRVS Trophy

Sunshine... blue sky... sea mist... a birdie, pars, bogeys, lost balls... it all happened today!

Ten terrific ladies played in the competition today.

Well done Chris J for your birdie on the second...three times better than my 9!!!

We started in sunshine and there was only the lightest of breezes so we had excellent weather conditions.

The issues came with hunting for balls in the rough... (and sometimes failing), then attempting to play out of it.
In some cases it was almost impossible!

However despite that there was some very good play.  Our worthy winner of the Medal and WRVS trophy was Lyn who played beautifully! She had 6 pars (including the 8th!);  great putting... sinking them from all over the place and was one turn of the ball away from a birdie on the 14th!
Well played Lyn!

Winner with a Nett 72

In second place was myself with a Nett 76 and Fran was third with a Nett 78!

For the full result click here.

Well done everyone...

and thank you card-markers!!

It was lovely to see Ros and Anne who joined us for coffee in the sunshine; there was a wedding going on so we made the most of the good weather!

Good luck everyone playing in the match tomorrow.

Thursday 3rd May

Back 9

Just 9 wonderful women came to play today...

'the sun shone... the grass was riz...we wondered where the birdies is!'

There weren't any birdies but there were a few pars!

The course looked gorgeous in the sunshine... the rough cutter may be back next week and there is talk of a new greens machine; Mark and Chris are doing sterling work in the mean time.

It was beautiful out there and some of us ended up without coats and jumpers enjoying the sun in tee shirts!

Our winner today had to be decided on Countback of course!

Sue D was our winner with 17 points, just pipping Jane to first place!

Sue recently represented Cape at Totnes in the medal winners regional final. She acquitted herself very well coming 18th out of 84 competitors. The contest was very close and Sue was only two shots away from being in the top ten!
Well done Sue (and caddie Judy!)

Playing in an England Golf competitions gives us a timely reminder about rules and etiquette.
Sue said everyone was asked to play 'ready golf', also receiving the reminder below about pace of play.

It is something we can all take on board... it's a good time for the reminder as (hopefully) we'll be playing more golf now the weather is better. (I say that with fingers most definitely crossed!)
